Ive never had to potty train a special needs child and today I have decided to start. Hes 3 years and 4 months old.. he screamed, I would say cry but no, screamed. I offered a reward even my cell phone to sit on the toilet. I got UH UH so I said ok that fine you can sit there. He cried, tried to get off the toilet. I said no no you sit there, go pee pee, your a big boy. He cried some more. he lost his breath with this kind of scream cry.. so I went to make the baby a bottle, I came back hes trying to talk and cry at the same time. I looked down, cus hes pointing saying poo poo. I said did you pee? I asked him to stand up, and he did, I looked in, didnt see a color change but I did notice the toilet seat was wet, his seat. I knew he peed, I jumped for joy. I gave him hugs over and over. I offered the reward (smarties) he didnt want them, so I put them away. he kept pointing to his bum saying he went. OMG I am so happy. I hope I can keep up with it and that he doesnt backfire. Bryce has autism so potty training is going to be a challenge. Im happy. that is all.

the thing that bothers me is the resistance he does. He is always that. it isnt stubbornness..anyone who knows autism knows that speaking to a child with autism, is almost like talking to a wall. Its awful to compare that but its the way he is. Its almost a hit and miss thing, if I push will he do it, yes sometimes, will he backfire and punish me, almost always. So I dont know which way he will go and if allowing him to fight me was ok. BUT I just dont know if I can sit there and *wait* till hes ready, I think I have to show him that the toilet is there for pee poo, and its grose, as he says it is, and fights to have diaper on. So I say if you want NO diaper, then you go toilet. I know that he wont understand the no diaper pee pants rules.. well not yet. Hes about a year behind, so I wont push the potty totally but yes this is a step forward and OMG was he ever happy

Sebastian is 3.5 Jan 10th, and nowhere near ready. I'm not sure if they even try with him at school, just to not upset him. I suppose I should ask lol It really wasn't something as important as getting him to stop banging his head, and screaming.

Congratulations on such prompt success! I don't have any experience with autism or special needs children, but it sounds like you guys got a great start!

Good luck as you continue; how wonderful that he was so happy about his success. It makes it that much easier to continue and be consistent when you have those clues that they will be happy with the end result, even if they fight along the way.

Well today was a bust, he refused. I will wait. Your son banged his head and done screaming also? Bryce did for a very long time. He also would lick his clothes, now he doesnt do that.

Its a great start!! Ours have all been over 3 to train, so I don't think he's "behind" in regards to toliet training. We've got 3 special needs ones here.

Way to go!!

He still bangs his head here. Not at school. :/ It is ALL structured at school though. I can't possibly do that here.
