The older girls switch off sometimes. Usually whoever sets the table (their chore for the day, as well as clean-up) gets to sit by themselves, which really means gets to sit next to the toddler. There are less battles at dinner time as a result.

When all 8 kids were home they kinda ate where they wanted since our kitchen wasn't big enough to hold all of us. So some are in the living room, some are at the kitchen table. Now that I only have 4 here consistently the littles eat at the table. One of my girls comes home in the weekends, and my oldest who is usually here has been staying with grandma. When they are home they join the littles and I eat in the living room.
There isn't assigned seats (never heard of that) but they do tend to sit in the same spots.
Well, although it started as assigned seats, after enough time passed its more relaxed, but everyone dies tend to gravitate to their own spot.
we do have movie nights where everyone eats downstairs in the family room to watch a movie, but that's also typically little ceasers pizza dinner night lol only out to eat that we can do more than once every 6months or so, too spendy with 7of us to go out to eat!
