or do you prevent that with only giving out 2-3 gifts per child?
we had present over load last year and it was AWEFUL! so this year we had one gift from Santa and then 2 gifts from mom and dad. and it was such a nice christmas! the kids enjoyed their gifts and they weren't greedy. and we even took our 2 oldest to the dollar store to pick out gifts to the other members of the family and they were so excited about having their siblings open the gifts from them that they didn't have time to get greedy or ask if there was more for them. I really enjoyed Christmas this year.

No. I think it balanced out quite nicely. There were quite a few gifts under the tree, but nothing huge & expensive. Lots of books, a few cartridges for their iQuests & LeapPads, small toys. The grandparents got them each a "big" thing this year.
ETA: Every year we do that dollar store trip. The kids each buy for dh & I, then they buy for each other. They have tons of fun and look forward to it every year. Bonus is they get all their shopping done for less than $30!
We give each child about 4 gifts, and none of those are really big gifts, but they are happy anyways, I am completely not into extravagant christmas gifts. The gifts are fun, but we want to keep it managable (money and space).
