Ever since I have been veggie I go through periods where I get really low Iron - I'm currently low on Iron again and I really dont want to go down the shot and Tablet route again
Has anyone got any Iron rich recipes they can share?
I dont have any good recipes to share with you, but I do have the same problem. I have always had an iron deficiency. My doc usually gives me a prescription for it (iron pills), but I never take them because they make me sick to my stomache. I think the Flinstone Multi Vitamins have lot's of iron in them and most green leafy vegetables. Anyways this thread has made me more concerned and I will talk to my doc about giving me another prescription and giving it another try. Good luck and make sure to check out those vitamins. By the way, it's strange that you started getting low iron after becoming a vegetarian. Maybe you have had it all along and never knew. How long have you been a vegetarian now?
There are some iron pills that do not cause consitpation (if that's something you are worried about). I got mine at the health food store. Broccoli, watermelon has iron. My midwife gave me a list of iron rich foods when I was pregnant, I'll look around for it and see if I still have it.
I've been a veggie for nearly 18 years, It seemed that since I became veggie I have always tended to go anaemic - I probably dont eat the right foods, but maybe it is something that has always been there
I eat meat and I am anemic. I just got done with my 8 week regement of iron pills! My advice, during your monthly...take iron for those days. May help keep you level the rest of the month. That is what my dr. told me to keep it at bay since there was no underlying reason for my anemia. Possibly heredity? My Mother and sister also suffer from it.
