For those of you with older kids, have you used any sort of assistive communication device to facilitate speech?

We are working right now to evaluate and determine the best assistive device for my dd. She is in special ed 1st grade and we presently have no idea how much she is actually comprehending because she lacks the skills to answer questions. She has a large vocabulary and can tell us what she wants and needs, but if you ask her questions other than mutliple choice (and what she wants to eat) she can't answer you and she can't have a conversation with you.

I was just wondering if anyone has any experience.

Yeah I am not sure. My DD is 2 and only says a few words at all. Communication is really frustrating for her I can only imagine how hard it must be for an older child. We have been using signing with Tasiya and that has helped ALOT.

I wish we could use signing, but with her visual impairment, it has been rough. She definately has sight (knows all her shapes, colors, letters, numbers, etc and is learning to read large print) but for her to see well, we would have to sign like 6-10 inches from her face.
