I am just wondering if anyone here has a child with Microtia and Aural Atresia? My 7 1/2 month old son was born with bi-lateral Microtia/Aural Atresia and I would love to talk to anyone else that knows about it. FYI if you are not familiar with this it is a birth defect of the outer ear structure. My son has no ear canals, ear drums, and the pinnas/auricles (outside/visible part of ears) are deformed. Because of this defect he has a bi-lateral conductive hearing loss and he wears a BAHA Softband, (bone conduction hearing aid), to help him hear.

My daughter doesn't have microtia but I did study about it in school. The students I've worked with have only had OTE hearing aids and FM systems.

My son was born with Microtia. He is now 11 years old, he is a straight A student. He is a great athlete and has defied all odds!He has had 5 reconstructive surgerys, all unsuccessful! He wears no baha, but we have considered it. He does seem to do fine in life just the way he is. Maybe it is better to just let things be. We have decided to let him make his own decisions with this when he is ready. He does not want to give up any sports for anything. He is a well adjusted boy who I think hears better than me sometimes!Your son will also adjust. Trust me!!
