Thanks for all your answers ladies. We had our follow up this morning at Maternal and Fetal Medicine and they saw that the second baby was not viable and was starting to absorb into the sac (was starting to look like a jellyfish already). So I guess it was not meant to be. We have a healthy little baby still growing in there, so it went well overall. I hear it is pretty common, they said it can happen in up to 80% of twin pregnancies. So I guess it is not something they had not seen. They said it will not affect my pregnancy in any other way (negatively was what we were talking about). So I hope the bean keeps growing nicely Thanks again for your time.

********************************

I am newly pregnant and from my beta levels, there was a possibility of twins (I assume that it can happen with any level though, so I never took that as anything serious). Today I went for my first sonogram at 6 weeks, 5 days and we saw an absolute baby on the left side of the picture with a heartbeat of 142 And on the right side, we saw an "object" that had a flicker inside, but they could not determine whether it was a twin or just the sac across the womb. Given my early gestation and the cruddy machine, they really could not determine anything definitive right now, besides that we have one healthy baby with a heartbeat. I have another sonogram next week at maternal and fetal medicine, so we will find more out then (the appt was for nothing related to twins, I have a clotting disorder that is being treated with shots). Did anyone have identical twins (I assume they would have to identical based on the pic) and did not get a "clear" picture of both twins from the start? I am trying not get ahead of myself, but both the doctor and the tech were thinking it might be twins. Here is the pic...even though I am sure no one here can tell anything from it. Thanks for taking the time to answer, I am sure you get board "crashers" all the time!

I was going to say that if it is twins, it looks like they'd be ID. We missed our second ID baby on our first u/s. The second u/s at almost 9 weeks showed us 2 babies. We were pleasantly surprised. My betas were within the normal range for a single pregnancy, but doubling every 32 hours. I do know women who have doubled that fast with only one though.

Good luck and KUP.

I had almost the same experience as Celry. My first u/s was at 5 weeks and they only saw one sac, no fetal pole or anything. My doctor was unsure of my beta levels and actually thought I was going to miscarry because they weren't "high enough". Then we went back for another u/s at 7 weeks and saw not one but two babies. My girls are identical as well. They shared a placenta but had a thin membrane separating the two sacs. Your u/s looks pretty similar to what we saw when we saw the two babies. Here is what we saw:

GL with your pregnancy and I hope you find out if you're having twins soon!

Thanks for your answers. I am more anxious now than I was before I went today! Lol. I would love either outcome, we are shooting for a healthy baby (after some miscarriage issues)...but I was shocked when they were so stuck on the fact that there might be twins in there. They kept trying to get a good picture, but between my tilted uterus, the machine not being good, and the angle they were getting on the "flicker" they just could not say anything for sure.

It is good to know that they don't always catch it right away and there might still be hope for that "baby" on the left. I will keep you posted, I am counting the days til next monday! I would love to be a twin mama...even though I imagine it is quite hard (and quite rewarding). We have several sets in the family, although none would be genetically inclined (especially since those would be ID).

Although I had 3 babies, 2 were identical and at I beleive 5 weeks, they only saw 2 babies and at 6ish weeks they saw all 3 and the identicals made their presence known! It's really hard to tell early on.
