Did anyone find out they were having twins without having an early ultrasound?

We will not be doing an ultrasound only heartbeat for the beginning of the pregnancy and I have a feeling its twins. Of course I felt that way with DD and I wasnt but anyways I just wondered the odds of knowing it was twins because of a double heartbeat

We found out we were having twins at 6w4d via an early ultrasound.

It is really, really hard to detect twins just by heartbeats. Echoes are common with the doppler, and most of the time they don't even use the doppler on me because they (including my specialist) say it is too hard to find them both.

Ours was with u/s also at just over 8 wks. Like Melissa said above, from there on out, my OB never used a doppler on me. He checke the hb's with an u/s at every appt.

Thank you for your response. We are trying to avoid ultrasounds especially multiple u/s so I was just curious if anyone on here had done that.

I think it would hard to distinguish HB's especially so early on. My OB used a bedside u/s for every appt up until 26wks or so to measure HB's as our twins had nearly the same HB's. It wasn't until he could clearly feel the babies did he do doppler.
Congrats on your little one or ones

I still haven't heard my girls on Doppler! Every other week and soon weekly, I'll be getting u/s to check heartrate. My girls have been running the exact same rates for
weeks (usually 156)...so there is no way to distinguish the two apart via Doppler.

Just an FYI...if you do have twins, you will be having a ton of u/s...it seems to be pretty standard policy everywhere I have heard of to have u/s at least monthly with twins and then weekly toward the end. I have had more u/s than I ever imagined possible and now the growth scan u/s on top of the regular visits AND the non-stress tests beginning in 2 weeks...I think I'm seeing these babies more often than I would with 10 more singleton pregnancies

We looks like we will just have to wait further into the pregnancy to know if I'm growing ahead of schedule then! I've had two cousins with twins who had a crazy amount of ultrasounds and thats what we are going to avoid. I know its common practice to do so but doesnt mean that its required. I was looking for an alternative but looks like we will just have less answers and more surprises at delivery!
Thanks again for all your responses mommies!

We found out we were expecting twins when I went to the ER for my knee... And found out I was pregnant, with twins! Via ultrasound at 6.5 weeks. I have since received an ultrasound at every OB visit, which was every 3 weeks up until I turned 7 months pregnant, then went every 2 weeks, and now that I'm 9 months, I am going weekly. I also got growth scans every month to make sure Thr babies were growing properly and receiving the nutrients and blood they needed. Also I now get NST's twice a week now and they do a quick ultrasound at each of those.

This is just from my personal research, but there is nothing proven that makes ultrasounds harmful to a baby/fetus. Ultrasounds are done more frequently on multiple pregnancies to make sure that everything is okay with babies and Mom. If something were to go wrong in utero, and mom not know, it can also be harmful/deadly to mom and other baby/fetus. Sorry not trying to scare you! But I've loved how often I get to see my girls, especially knowing this is my last pregnancy. I'll be 36 weeks tomorrow; so here's to hoping the decide to arrive soon! And congratulations!

My OB had no reason to suspect twins, so when we heard one heartbeat, I guess he was satisfied with that. I found out it was twins at my 16 week ultrasound.

I knew via early u/s, however, my HCG levels were insane early on. At 4w I was 1086, and at 4w6d I was over 5000. With my singleton daughter I was 7000 at 7 weeks.
