We first found out about Zac's heart at my 20 week scan. From there we saw specialists galore. We were given an ok prognosis. It would be an uphill battle but it was one that we could do. We learnt that Zac had Tricuspid Atresia (no or very small tricuspid valve) this also leads to a hypoplastic right ventricle. To compinsate he also had a VSD. In additon Zac also had a narrow aortic arch and as if that wasn't enough he also had transpositon of the great arteries. These conditions are very rare and to get all three (TA, TGA, and narrow aortic arch) is a one in a million chance.
At five days old he underwent his first OHS. He suffered several complications (which I don't feel up to going into in detail yet). At 8 weeks old he developed complete heart block. On June 12th he had a permanent pacemaker placed. As he had battled several infections, it was also decided that he would undergo his second OHS then too. This was two months earlier than planned.
Again he battled complications and infections but he finally came home on July 29th at 3 and a half months old. Sadly his stay at home was to be very short. Following what we (DH, I, Zac's home care nurse and GP) thought was a chest infection, Zac stopped breathing the night of August 13. He passed away at 9:58pm. He was 4 months and 4 days old.
