Luke Connor was born on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 after an uneventful pregnancy & very easy labor. An hour after he was born, the nursey staff had to place him on his abdomen, apply oxygen & draw blood cultures on him. He was unable to keep his body temperature & oxygen saturation up. When they pediatrician came in to evaluate him, she noticed a heart murmur. And, Luke had some characteristics of Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome). So, he was air lifted to a children's hospital. There he was diagnosed with a moderate sized VSD & Trisomy 21. After a week's stay in the NICU & a week in a facility to work on feeding issues, Luke was discharged to home. They wanted to monitor the VSD & see him again in six months.
Luke started with noisy breathing (stridor) a few weeks after birth. This was not related to his heart condition but helped us in getting the VSD repaired. On August 20, the ENT wanted to do a bronchoscopy, laryngoscopy & esophagoscopy to make sure the stridor was from a floppy trachea or voice box & not a structural malformation. But, before they scoped him, they did another echo & found that Luke's VSD was not closing & that the pressure in the right side of his heart was elevated. They scheduled surgery for September 11.
On September 11, 2008, Luke had a VSD, ASD, & PFO closed. He did amazingly well & was home in three short days. I am so glad that it's over & absolutely thrilled at how well he's doing & I never realized how sick he was until he was well.
