Hello ladies. I am not a mommy to a child with heart problems, but I am an Aunt to one. My intro may be premature, but I'm scared.
My nephew is 5 1/2 (6 in May). I had noticed he tired easily, but had brushed it off as to my parents (his main caregiver) not allowing to actually be a kid. Well, a couple of weeks ago he came down with strep throat. He was taken to the ER (it was the middle of the night and his fever was super high). There they noticed his BP was really high.
In response they did an EKG. The EKG showed a narrow artery and an appointment was set up with the nearest children's hospital for an MRI. The MRI confirmed the doctor's suspicion and he has been scheduled for surgery on the 18th.
We have been told that the artery is the one responsible for his main blood flow to his legs. This is why his legs are so much weaker than his arms and why he tires so easily. The doctor has stated that without the surgery he will most likely be paralyzed later on due to lack of blood flow. Additionally, paralysis is one of the risks to the surgery.
I don't know many details of the surgery (other than they will not be using a stint). They expect for him to be in the hospital for four days...
Thanks to Jaidynsmum for my siggy!
