Who else has one of these cribs that's being recalled?
I'm so bitter about this! We went shopping with DH's parents last week and bought our stroller and crib/mattress. We knew exactly what stroller we wanted, but with the crib, I feel almost as if we were slightly pressured by my MIL to get the crib we did get.
She doesn't like the looks of those convertible cribs and insisted that we NEED to get a drop side crib (even though I'm 5'11" and DH is 5'10")...so it's not as if we really need one due to height issues. I had a gut feeling that something wasn't right about these drop side cribs because I guess they just don't look as sturdy as the one piece ones or whatever they're called. I just knew it. I even asked the girl at the store we bought it at repeatedly if she knew of any recalls on drop side cribs or if she knew in general if they were safe and looking back at her answers, she really was trying to avoid answering it and just kept blubbering about something else. I should have realized at the time.
I'm mad at myself because I was doing research since I heard of this recall yesterday and so many people online were saying how they've known that drop side cribs have basically been $h!t for a LONG time and at work, I had a page open on the net talking about this recall and my co-worker walks by and saw it and says, "who would be dumb enough nowadays to buy a drop side crib. They've been horrible for years." I felt like a complete moron. I feel as if I should have known better and I just feel so dumb now
Then I feel weak because I should have spoken up to my MIL more and just told her straight up what WE wanted and it's not what she likes/dislikes. But at the time, I was just so excited to be purchasing a crib that I guess I wasn't thinking too clearly and well this is our first crib we bought, so I put my trust into the sales people.
Then there's the issue that when the girl went to see if they had any in their warehouse, ours was of course the last one. So now we have a crib that was floor model that's being recalled and we have NO refund, NO exchange. ARGH.
And my dear Jonny decided to surprise me and put the crib together yesterday while I was at work. I phoned him at the end of my work day because that's when abouts I found out about the recall and told him about the recall. I had no idea that he had already put it together.
Stork Craft is offering to give the new brackets and to give something that'll always keep the drop side up, but I honestly don't know if I'll ever feel comfortable using that crib. Apparently they had a recall in Jan. 2009 and even those people who got their new parts are having them recalled this time too GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Jon's parents did say they would buy us a new crib and just write this one off if we have to ($ is not really an issue to them), but I still don't know what's bothering me. I guess I just feel stupid and feel as if I should have known. I should have done more research before hand...
Sorry I can't help ya, Steph. We definitely don't have one of those drop-side cribs.
Julia has a convertible crib where the mattress drops to accommodate her growing; the railing does not drop. I would never feel comfortable getting one of those cribs because of all the horror stories I've heard about them
As for Pip, we haven't bought any of her furniture yet (she'll sleep in our room in a bassinette for now) but I can assure you she will also be getting a convertible crib when we're ready to move her to her own room.
Thank you to Jaidynsmum for my beautiful siggie!

I don't have one of the recalled cribs but I do have a dropside crib and it's great but it's never been recalled and we check the screws and such often and it has a metal bracket holding the drop side on, instead of plastic so I feel a bit more secure.
A friend of mine does have one of the recalled cribs though and she's not pleased at all about it. She had to sit on hold for like an hour for the first recall to get the replacements for the brackets that hold the bottom of the crib on and then had to sit on the phone again yesterday to get the drop side pieces yesterday. We were talking about how ridiculous it seems that the most recalled toys/items seem to be for the most vulnerable age group - babies.
Don't feel bad about getting pressured by your MIL... I think we've all had those moments... lots of people all over the world have bought those cribs without a second thought so you're not alone... if they're willing to buy you another one, find the one you want by yourself on a shopping trip and then TELL them which one you want. Hugz!
