So while I was TTC I started taking an extra folic acid along with my prenatal (Prenatal has 800mg and the extra pill I take has 800mg), I read that it was fine because whatever your body didn't need it wouldn't absorb...Well today I read an artical in a magazine saying too much folic acid can be bad...I did a lot of reading before I started to take it...I don't know what killed Ella, I don't know if it was something genetic etc, so I figured it wouldn't hurt, but now i'm so worried that i've poisoned my new baby...Do I keep taking the extra or stop? and if I stop will it hurt things now? i'm so stressed out about this...I thought I did the right thing by reading up on it before I started

The amount of extra folic acid you would have to take to hurt the baby is staggering. It's a water soluble vitamin, your body does flush extra out, it disappears when you pee. You're not taking two 800 milligram pills -you're actually taking two 800 micrograms. I take that much everyday too. In fact, folic acid is available by prescription for pregnant women, as much as 5000 micrograms per pill, and your body cannot absorb more than 1000 milligrams (that's 10,0000 micrograms!!) - the rest you just pee out. In fact, you are peeing any extra out all the time. It is technically possible to overdose on folic acid, as it is technically possible to overdose on anything, but I could not find any reported cases of folic acid overdose.

I'm not sure what magazine you are reading, but they are scaring you and it doesn't sound like they have all the facts.

No prob. If you ever have any other questions like this one, I have access to medical and research abstracts and can do a little digging for you.

Next time I TTC I'm going to be taking extra folic acid too. My prenatal I have now has 800mcg, but I'll step it up 3 or 4 months before we're ready to TTC, since I'm probably not going to be able to keep taking them when I conceive (never can).

I'm amazed that I have healthy children with as sick as I get.

Taking the extra is a good move Megan.

With this pregnancy I took 5mg up until 20 weeks!

Katrina had enlarged ventricles in her brain and even though it wasn't genetic and was nothing that I did wrong (since I was on the proper amount (1mg) of folic acid when I was pregnant with her), my family Dr., my OB, fertility specialist, a few pharmacists, Genetic Counselor AND Geneticist ALL recommended just to be on the safe side to take the 5mg. I trust whole heartedly all of those specialists that told me that - because I was very paranoid as well about taking too much.

But like Rebecca said, I think that magazine really better get its facts straight before writing an article that just ends up scaring people and doing more harm than good. I have not once read / heard anything about having too much folic acid (unless it's like absolutely CRAZY amounts) that would cause harm - because you just pee out any excess that your body doesn't use.

The only thing I heard about taking too much folic acid is that it could potentially hide a Vitamin B deficiency - but that is more common among seniors.

Hope that helps!

My OB had me on 2 mg when I was pregnant with Mady. He said the higher dosage has been found to do all sorts of good. So we went with.

The magazine was fit pregnancy, the new issue...I'll try to remember to get it out of my car tomorrow and type up exactly what it said...It really put me in a panic.

I have MTHFR which inhibits the bodies ability to absorb folic acid (and is very common) I took 3mg while pregnant with Cammie.

Now I am worried since I only take 800mg tablet. Is it not enough? In my prior pregnancy I took 1000mg tablet but every other day since it made my constipation worse.

If you don't have any other health problems and your diet is a good one, it should be enough. Like I said before, I only took the 800mcg in my prenatals and that was only when I was ttc, since I couldn't hold them down while pregnant, and my babies were all healthy. But since you can't really overdose, there isn't harm in taking a little bit more.

I'm taking extra this pregnancy too, just because I'm overcautious. I took just the 800mg in my prenatal last time and I was fine.

Many doctors actually prescribe a much higher dose of folic acid for ladies who have had a loss due to a neural defect. Everyone else is correct - everything I have read has stated that you can't overdose on it.

this is my first time taking the extra folic acid...I used to just take the prenatal and that was it...I also didn't start to take the prenatal till I got pregnant in my first 4 pregnancy's and they all came out healthy, so i'm sure your fine ...I'm just doing everything different since I don't know what went wrong in my pregnancy with Ella...I'm not taking any kind of medication except for thyroid and my vits (Not even my hand cream), I cut out almost all caffine etc.

Generally speaking, 800mcg (micrograms, it's not milligrams actually) is enough, more than that is prescribed for women at risk for/with a history of certain defects, like neural tube defects, and women with conditions that might interfere with B vitamin absorption. I take 800mcg in a prenatal and another 800mcg, but that's only because my doctor recommended a DHA supplement and I couldn't find one that didn't also have folic acid (except a prescription but that one cost SO MUCH money!)
