Hi there

New to this board but like a lot of what I have read already. Here is a question for all you breastfeeding moms.

A friend of mine kind of blindsided me today when she commented on a friend of hers who did not take her advice. That being, not to nurse at night as it sets up bad habits for baby later on.

I took her to task a bit b/c I nursed all day/everyday and until he was 2 3/4 years. He quit on his own and the way I wanted it to happen. I did not feel hindered, cramped, or any of the other things that she seemed to imply that people may feel if they nurse their baby at night. Well what....should I introduce a bottle for that time? Why? If the child is 4 months and you are a breastfeeding mom......isn't that the way it goes? Am I nuts? I need some help here.

I just cannot agree with her statement that to nurse a 4 month old at night, sets the child up for poor sleep habits later on. Yes she has 2, but does not breastfeed. And yes hers sleep beautifully.

Help

I am not currently BF, but I did BF both of my children every 3 hours in the first 4 - 5 months and neither one of them developed a bad sleeping pattern. By around 5months with DS he woke up less often at night to feed, but that was his natural cycle. By 6 months he slept from 10pm to 5 am without waking at all for a feed. DD started sleeping through from about 6 1/2 months.

I'm currently bfing and my girl is almost 3 months. At first she was constantly bfing about ever 1.5 hrs at night. She did that for quite a while then finally went every 2.5 hrs then about 5 hrs and now she sleeps 7-8 hrs straight. It all depends on the child. I would do what's best for you. When Kynslee (my little girl) does wake at night I bf her. She happen to wake 2x's last night (growth spurt I think) and I bf'd her both times. She does eat every hour to hour and half when awake though and I've had some say that she should be going longer between feedings now, or I shouldn't feed her that often, ect.... But, I know she's hungry and I've tried going longer and it's no use - she's hungry and needs to eat that often. Just try and ignore people and do what's best for YOU & BABY!!!
