They will completely knock your DH out for this, don't worry. The procedure itself can take anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour, depending upon how quickly your urologist can find sperm. Afterwards your DH will need to keep the incision area iced for 25 minutes of every hour while he's awake. Get some frozen peas or popcorn kernels, store them in sandwich bags, and put them in the freezer ahead of time - this is a much easier and effective way to ice that area than using ice cubes. There will be some bleeding and your DH may have trouble urinating the first couple of days, but this is normal. You'll need to treat the incision with Neosporin for at least a week. Your DH will also not be allowed to lift anything more than 10 pounds for a week. But overall, the pain should go away after a few days; my DH recovered very nicely from his surgery.
Just make sure you find a reputable urologist to do the biopsy. If they don't do it correctly, it can cause permanent testicular failure.
Good luck!!

My DH had this done yesterday and he chose not to be knocked out for this, (the urologist gave him the option) and his biopsy ended up being more time consuming and more tissue removed so the doc said he would be in more pain then most men. But with that, I kept rotating ice packs from the freezer for him (I used the reusable hot/cold packs) and he took the pain meds yesterday. So far today, he says he feels better and has not taken the pain meds yet today.
Good luck!!

Richmond Girl and Becky thank you so much for the info that helps so much!!! We don't have our first appt with in infertility specialist until later in March but we've already been told we will have to do this by the urologist we've already seen but he doesn't do anything like that. Thankfully the Dr. we've chosen is suppossed to be one of the top male infertility dr's in the US...that's what we've heard at least so hopefully we can be pregnant by the end of the year I would just be thrilled!! We haven't used any type of bc in 8 yrs so it's time to finally do something.
I also forgot to ask did you find out right away if they found any sperm or not?

With the S/A, I got the results the same day. With these biopsies, it'll take a few days. The samples were sent to 2 different labs and they will be reviewing them over several days. The doctor said that sometimes the sperm are not present the first day, or even the second, that it takes the sperm a couple of days of being in the "medium" before they become active and move around to be seen. I don't understand all of it, and I think that's how the doctor explained it.
and we were referred to our urologist by our RE and they work together closely for infertility situations. The urologist was actually calling the RE's office when we left yesterday to go over everything.
Good luck!!

Thank you Becky.. I hope things go well for you and DH. The guy we are seeing will be the one to do the biopsy and he will also be the one to do the IVF if we have to go that route.

Thanks! I hope we get our results back soon and we'll know what our options are.
Good luck - the end of March will be here before you know it!!!

Our urologist was able to tell us right away if they found sperm. While DH was waking up, he spoke to me about what they did and how much they found. Then they put the sperm through a "cryo" test to see if it would survive the freeze/thaw process. For a couple of days we were on pins and needles but everything ended up working out just fine.
