Hello Ladies. I thought that someone might be able to give me some insight into my husbands semen analysis. We went to the urologist on Monday and had a SA done. While he was there, he was told he have grade II Varicocele on both side. I received the results of his semen analysis yesterday, and here is what I have made of it. I was wondering if anyone could give me some honest insight as to how bad it is. His semen volume and sperm count came back low.

Semen Volume is 2.6 and it said it should be between 3.0-5.0.
Sperm Count is 19 million and it said it should be between 60-150 million.

Everything else came back as normal. We go for another SA in a week and a half.

Thank you sooooo much.

Honestly, you can't base everything on one SA. Because they can change a good bit from one to the next. I would wait until you get the results from the 2nd one before even beginning to worry. But actually, the numbers you gave aren't horrible. I've seen much, much less.

Thank you. We are waiting until the second one, and we are going to have a third. I am just really unfamiliar with this and it is really hard to find answers on the internet. I didn't know if it was absolutely horrible or if there was an ok chance for us regardless of our results.

You probably don't need to have a third unless that one is going to be 90+ days down the line, when there could be a material difference in the numbers from any lifestyle changes you make between now and them. But I agree with Brandi, the second SA would be good just to double check the numbers from the first.

Overall, your numbers actually don't seem that bad for MFI. You're right on the borderline for normal sperm count which is 20mm.

Hope your 2nd SA brings you really good news!!

I was going to say the same thing...It really isn't that bad, considering normal sperm is 20mil or more. As for the volume, that can very from analysis to the next. my dh's volume was WAY different for each of his..one was normal one was slightly low...so that's not a big deal. Don't worry about it, I mean it's slightly low, but nothing at all to be overly concerned about. I'd talk to your doctor and see if the varicocele is worth repairing or if there are other things you all should do.

Anna, I was so sleepy last night when I responded that I didn't see the part where your DH had dual varicocele. That is more than likely the cause of the borderline count. Especially since on both sides. They don't normally repair them unless they are causing pain, or affecting fertility, which it is in y'alls case. The procedure is simple, and is outpatient surgery. Your DH will be very sore for a couple of days, but will be fine shortly. After getting the surgery, another SA will be done a minimum of 3 months later, because it takes that long for new sperm to form, and often 6 months to see full results. I know our insurance covered his surgery.

Thank you! His is causing him some pain. I am sure that we will end up having the surgery and hopefully get our healthy baby.

I do have another question, I have read that 20 million sperm is considered normal. Why does the test say normal is between 60-150 million?

I guess different labs have different specs for what is 'normal'. That is the only thing I can think of.

Hard to tell without actually seeing what you are referring to, but my guess is the same as Brandi's - different labs have different standards.
