So my DH went to a new urologist last week. This doc was supposed to be the one who would do the sperm aspiration, so that we could have sperm to use for the IVF with ICSI. He looks at my DH's MRI and says " Your left side looks perfectly fine, there is the seminal vesicle, and the vas...all we need to do is deroof the cyst in your prostate and you could make babies naturally." Ummm, ok. Now I don't know what to think. That is not what we heard from the doctor who did the ultrasound (who was a radiologist, who has written textbooks and performed countless surgeries)said. He said that he did not see seminal vesicles. No seminal vesicles=IVF with ICSI is the only option. But, now a radiologist who read the MRI and this new urologist both say that the seminal vesicle is there. So we are going to go for the surgery for DH,(to remove the cyst, which should give him a normal sperm count/volume afterwards) which of course will be covered by insurance. If it doesn't work, and we'll know this before we would have started IVF, then we go ahead with IVF. If it does work, then let this be a lesson to all of us...doctors are only human, they don't know everything and they can and will make mistakes.
I feel a little unmoored by the whole experience...I really thought that this option had been lost to us. I am happy to not have to worry about the money for IVF for a little while.
