Where did he go to have it done? My husband and I have "NTNP" for 1 year and have actually been TTC for 5 months....We have both decided that we want him to get a sperm count done. He does not currently have a doctor, is this something we should start out talking to my gyno about? I mean I am totally unfamiliar with this...but we know that him getting a SA done would be our first step in ruling out any possible problems. Thanks in advance for any information

With us, when we started working with an RE, he ordered the S/A on DH. I know others have had urologists, Ob/gyn, or regular docs order the test. I would think any doc could order it & if it's not covered by insurance it is still not that expensive. Good Luck!!!

Thank you! I guess I will just start by asking my doctor what she recommends and hopefully we will be on our way from there!

That sounds like a good plan. The S/A is embarrassing for the guys, but this is one of the least invasive and least expensive tests out there.

DH got a referral to a urologist from my OB/GYN when we started the fertility testing process, and had his first SA. When we started seeing an RE, he got another SA, a specialized SA, and then had another semen work-up for IVF.

You can just get an SA done at a urologists office...a basic SA can range anywhere from $130-$300 depending on where you go. Insurance paid for all of ours, so I can't remember exactly what ours cost.

There are also at-home tests you can try if your DH is embarrassed. Here is a link to one of the most popular: Fertell Fertility Test : American Pregnancy Association Though the at-home tests won't tell you everything that could be wrong, it could be a good way to "break the ice" with a stubborn or shy DH

Good luck!

Mine refuses to have it because he had a huge amount of testing done as a child/teen that determined he will have very low sperm count and never be able to get a woman pregnant the old fashioned way.

Anyway the doctor still really wanted him to do it and it was brought up at our first consult.

I would assume you would start by asking your OBGYN and probably get a referral.

My ob/gyn gave me the cup for DH's SA....then I just dropped the specimen off at the lab when we finally decided to have it done.
