I agree with you girls. I *think* I'm for it as we DEF need some insurance reform and I think taking steps is a necessary thing. I don't think we could have gone straight to UHC, not with the cost of school for doctors! and it would have been too big of a shock for a lot of people. I don't really know how much "reform" will be happening with this bill, but at least getting people insured who were not insurable/couldn't afford it before is a start.
I think at some point I heard there is a limit on how much an insurance company can profit from the premiums people pay. If they don't spend a certain percentage on health care, that excess needs to be refunded to the insuree's. Not sure that that even made it in the bill that was passed, but I remember hearing something about that. If anybody knows for sure, let me know! I would be happy about that if it made it in!
I think the fines are to encourage people to sign up to help lower everybody's cost overall. The more people on a policy the greater the risk is spread out, so the lower premiums can be. You would still have a choice, it's like car insurance- that's mandatory, but you can choose not to have it, you will just have to pay fines if anything happens and you get caught without insurance. The fines for not having health insurance are probably a lot lower than for not having car insurance. I haven't heard for sure what the fines are, but I think that's the reasoning behind the fines.
