I keep hearing so much about this new Health Care bill that passed. I'm still up in the air about how I feel about it.

What do you all think about it?

I'm waiting to hear more details. I think there are aspects of it still lost in the political black hole that is Capital Hill. I like the idea of people with pre-existing conditions being able to get coverage, and the companies not being allowed to cancel your insurance when you get sick (and actually need them). I am a doctor, and so I am really curious about the medicare reimbursement cuts to physicians and hospital, and also whether there will be any reform to the malpractice laws (and all those personal injury lawyers with questionable moral character).

Sorry to ramble. I'll guess, we'll see.

Everything was done behind closed doors. I don't agree with how it was done and there were so many questions. I don't like how they are gonna fine people if they don't have insurance. That's unconstitutional.

I agree with you girls. I *think* I'm for it as we DEF need some insurance reform and I think taking steps is a necessary thing. I don't think we could have gone straight to UHC, not with the cost of school for doctors! and it would have been too big of a shock for a lot of people. I don't really know how much "reform" will be happening with this bill, but at least getting people insured who were not insurable/couldn't afford it before is a start.

I think at some point I heard there is a limit on how much an insurance company can profit from the premiums people pay. If they don't spend a certain percentage on health care, that excess needs to be refunded to the insuree's. Not sure that that even made it in the bill that was passed, but I remember hearing something about that. If anybody knows for sure, let me know! I would be happy about that if it made it in!

I think the fines are to encourage people to sign up to help lower everybody's cost overall. The more people on a policy the greater the risk is spread out, so the lower premiums can be. You would still have a choice, it's like car insurance- that's mandatory, but you can choose not to have it, you will just have to pay fines if anything happens and you get caught without insurance. The fines for not having health insurance are probably a lot lower than for not having car insurance. I haven't heard for sure what the fines are, but I think that's the reasoning behind the fines.

I am pretty sure I am FOR IT as well. I like the idea that EVERYONE should have insurance. DH and I were talking about it in the car the other day. This was my point:-- Everyone basically HAS to have car insurance, and usually most people have house insurance too. So why not insure your health?? I mean- some people rather pay for car insurance on not health insurance in which your health sometimes takes a dump fast then your car. No one complains about having to pay car insurance every month, so why does everyone complain about covering there own butts- Litterally!! People are freaking out because its another bill they have to pay each month but hey, you have to pay bills every month for the rest of your life so whats another bill. PLUS- it will benefit you in the end!
Also- being fined for it?? Yes- I think that is also a good idea. It goes with my same point of the car insurance or house insurance....you get pulled over without proof of insurance or with out insurance at all-- you get fined!!! Your house burns down, and you don't have insurance...well your screwed!! YOU SHOULD HAVE HAD INSURANCE!!
Anyways, I think the new bill is great. I think there will be alot of people who are mad about it because its a sort of "Law with punishment" but I think its a smart move.
