How many motile sperm do you need to be a candidate for IUI? Just wondering how much higher DH's counts would need to be in order for IUI to be an option for us.

Also when they wash the sperm do they weed out the ones with bad morphology and the ones that might be "motile" but not swimming very well?

Intrauterine Insemination, IUI for Infertility Treatment

If you scroll almost all the way down there is a chart with the success rates for different amounts of sperm.

When they wash the sperm the "bad" ones are weeded out. They spin the sample, so the best swimmers go to the top and that's what they use for the IUI. At my IUI our sample only had 1.86 mil "good" ones, but they said that was enough to get pg so we went ahead with the IUI anyways.

Wow. According that chart, even with more than 20 million motile sperm AND injectibles, there's only a 12% success rate?!!?!?! That's less than the 25% chance that you always hear about for "normal, healthy" couples in any given cycle of just having intercourse. I don't get it.

the chart is for couples who have been trying for 2 years, I think that's where the discrepancy comes from. These stats are for people with known infertility issues. So if you are only dealing with MFI then I would think your chances of success would be higher with IUI than what is listed on the chart, esp since you've gotten pg before. I would just look at the difference in the percentages based on number of motile sperm. It's not gonna be exactly your odds, but it should give you an idea of where you'd be based on how many motile sperm you have. I hope that helps!

Wow 1.86 mil was ok? Gosh, I thought I heard somewhere that you had to have a lot more than that! Whew makes me feel better! Do you know what your hubby's count were before the wash?

We used donor, so we were only working with .5 ml ( I think thats WAAAY lower than what a guy would "donate") The count was actually a little lower than what I said earlier, before washing the numbers were...
16.86 mil total count
6.87 mil total motile

after washing...
1.61 mil total count
1.56 mil total motile

you are guaranteed at least 10 mil total motile AFTER washing, so they are filing a complaint and if I'm not pg from this IUI we will get our money back for this sample. But the nurse said "it's enough to get you pregnant" our odds were just waaay lower than they would have been with >10mil

I'm not sure what numbers they would look for normally, but the only way for us to get the money back from the ds was to go through with the IUI, which is thankfully covered by insurance so at least we won't be out a ton of money there if it doesn't work out.

Can any of you help me figure out what my DH's counts mean ?? I was really confused trying to figure it out on the paper they gave me:

Sperm count per mil (normal >20 x 10 6/ml) MY DH results: 50 x 10 6/ml
Sperm count per ejaculate (normal ?40 10 6/ejaculate) MY DH results 80 x 10 6/ejac

** I couldnt figure out how to type that 10 6 business, on the paper the 10 is a bigger font and then 6 is to the right upper corner of the 10 **

Any advice ???????????

Hi,
I think the 10 6/ml is referring to 1 million. 10 to the 6th power, meaning 10x10x10 and so on, which would be 1mil. So that would be 50mil sperm count which is of course fantastic.
Hope that helps. I'm new here and don't have lots of knowledge but I'm a math geek.
