Hi, my name is Gabriela! I'm new! My husband and I have been TTC for at least 3 years!!! I always thought it was me....but as it turns out, it is him. His S/A is so low and not promising. I had a Dr. appt. today and he basically said that he is referring me to a fertility specialist after looking at my hubby's S/A. He also said that most likely we would not have a natural pregnancy! He mentioned IUI, IVF.....I just want to cry! Everyone around me is getting pregnant!!! I want to be a mommy!!!

I tried to do some research....softcups, robotusin (sp?).....I don't know where to begin. Has anyone tried these... and gotten preg. with their husbands numbers being so low????:

I am so sorry! I am going through this as well, it is sooooo depressing when it seems like everyone else is getting pregnant. Sometimes I google stories of BFPs with low sperm counts and it makes me feel a little better hearing people's success stories. Has your DH been checked out for the reason for his low counts? My DH has a large varicocele and I think that is what is causing our problems. He is getting surgery in march and I am hoping it will help, I have read some encouraging stories on here lately about how the surgery has helped counts and motility. Good luck and I hope the doctors can give you some answers and hope.

Hi Nala,
Thank you so much for replying to my post! I really appreciate it! I'm sorry, that you are going through this too. We went to a fertility clinic last year....when we were not getting pregnant.....anyway they ran all the tests on me first....and everything came back fine...then did the S/A on my DH...then the dr. said "oh, the only way you will ever have a baby is through IVF." He did also tell me to have my DH checked for a varicocele. My DH was checked and had and ultrasound but no varicocele was found. My Dh was very frustrated and so was I. We stopped going to the fertility clinic b/c it seemed to me that all they wanted was the $. We took a break from it all and just bd on our own to see if it was possible but a year has gone by and no pregnancy. My ob referred me to another fertility clinic, so I have an appt. with them on March 11, so maybe they can can give us more insight on my Dh S/A.

I have read good things about when a man has a surgery for the varicocele, it can help a lot!!! When is your Dh surgery?
I, like you go online to find stories...just to help me through this. Is your DH on any vitamins? I read a bunch last night about vitamins, so maybe that could help too. Thanks again for your support and I am here to support you too!!!!

Sorry, you did tell me when your Dh surgery was! I just re read my post and it is really long!!!

Hey Gabriela, I am so sorry to hear what your going through but unless your dh has no count, don't let those doctors tell you IVF is your only hope, we were told the same thing 5 years ago, IVF was our only shot and we had about a 1% chance of conceiving naturally, I got my dh on all kinds of supplements and we conceived naturally after 26 months of trying and my dh's counts were very low. We are trying for # 2 now that our son is 3 years old and we've been trying for 15 months this time, my dh was recently retested and his SA was dramtically better then it was 4-5 years ago when trying for our son, its nearly normal now and I can only attribute it to all the vitamins and supplements he's on as well as much prayer, here is a list of what he takes.

Zinc
Acetyl L-Carnitine
L-Arginine
Men one a day multi-vitamin
Fertile Aid for Men
Super Goat Weed (or also called horney goat weed)
Fish oil

I hope you get your BFP soon, did they give you the numbers from your dh's SA? They should have at least let you know what the count/motility/morphology was which is the basics.

Joliving4Jesus,
Thank you so much for responding to me! He does have a count. Here it is.....

Seman Volume: 1.20 ml
Viscosity: 4++
Sperm Concentration: 36.2 ml
Motility: 7 %
Morphology: 5% were normal

That is exactly how I felt when I left the ob yesterday....he basically said we would not have a baby naturally with these numbers. Then referred me to the RE.. I hate when dr.s give you no hope! Your story helps me so much. I will try the vitamin combination you gave me for my DH. I hope you get your very soon!!!!! Thanks again for your support and advice. It is truly appreciated.

Your welcome, I know how incredibly hard this journey can be. Looking at your dh's numbers it looks like he needs to get his volume and motility up the most, I don't know a ton about getting the volume up but I do know that the Acetyl L-carnitine, zinc, and fertilaid for men helps with the motility, here is a link to where I get my fertilaid for men:

FertilAid Fertility Aid for Men 1 Month Supply - eBay (item 190387097041 end time Mar-02-11 15:53:55 PST)

And then I get the zinc and aceytl l-carnitine at any drug store. We were recommended to have my dh take a male enhancement pill thats about $100 a month called proxeed, it was too expensive for us so we researched the active ingredients in it and had my dh start taking that and his motility went from 20% to 58% in about 4 months, so it definitely helped.

We have considered IVF this time around but only because my dh is 10 years older then me and nearing 40 and I don't want him to be too old to enjoy playing with his kids, we're giving it until summer before we consider it, if we do it though we are considering going here....

IVF, In-Vitro Fertilization, Infertility, Endometriosis in NY, NJ, PA, TX

It isn't located anywhere near us here in GA but they are super reasonable on their IVF prices, cheapest I've found and they also offer free IVF if your willing to donate some of your eggs to other infertile couples, my dh and I have decided we don't want to do that but its a option for someone that doesn't mind. They work with out of town patients as well.

I really hope that you conceive naturally and beat the odds, if you have time, I'd recommend giving those supplements a try and have your dh retested 3-4 months later because any treatment started will show no improvement for at least 3 months...and if his volume/motility still hasn't improved, then other options should be looked into. I hope neither one of us have to do IVF, its a lot to put your body through and more then that, extrememly expensive and most insurance will not cover it. I wish you luck in your journey and ask any questions you may have, I feel like a book of knowledge on male factor issues since I was determined to find out all I could during the times we were TTC.

Joliving4Jesus,

Thank you again for all of this information. It is so nice to talk/write to someone that totally understands! I hope we don't have to do IVF.........but if it is my last option....I will. I talked to dh last night and told him all about the information you gave me....some of the vitamins/supplements we had...some we will get this weekend. I did have an appointment with the re March 7.....but I canceled it. I made an appt. in May. We are both going to help each other and try to get his numbers up before we go. Thank you for the links, I will look them up today.

I guess, I never thought this would happen to us. I always thought when we want to get pg, we will. Then a few years went by and a lot of couples that we know were getting pg right and left but we were not.

Last year was a nightmare because we starting going to this fertility clinic close to our house. Right away the doctor thought it was all me even before running any tests on dh then finally did a SA and calls me at work and says..."oh, it's your dh and ivf is your only chance". They wanted all this cash up front, which we really did not have. My insurance covers all diagnostic testing and the fertility place knew that, but still made us pay cash until they could "verify" our coverage. We walked out of there spending $540.00 ....then it got worse...they refused to bill the insurance, held on to our money for months. The only thing, I really got was that I'm fine, it's your dh and told me to have him checked for a vericocele. Then get back to him.

Luckily, he was checked by a urologist and did not have one. Then came the other frustration, the urologist sent us home with a cup and we were to bring it back the following week to the lab...within a half hour, which we did. We go to the lab and they tell us "oh, we no longer do SA, you need to go to this lab across town". I call the lab from my cell and I tell them the situation and they tell me by the time you get it here it will be too late and we will not accept it. So I tell her..can we bring it next week...she says yes...we go back get another cup..blah blah go to the lab the following week and she tells me "oh, you needed to call this in first, we can't accept it. (I guess a courier picks it up, which she failed to mention the previous week) We were so frustrated ....my husband threw the SA sample across the parking lot. (he did pick it up) That is when we decided we need a break and try on our own!

Which leads me here a year later in the same situation!!!! The only thing different, is we have a new RE who bills the insurance and my dh wants to do the sample there this time!! Sorry, this is so long but I wanted you to know the whole story!!!! Your knowledge has helped me have hope. I hope that you don't have to do ivf either. I understand the age, I am the opposite, I'm seven years older then my dh, so I'm also freaking out about that. Thank you! Thank you!!!! Please, keep me posted with you and your dh.

I'm just popping in to say good luck!! I know how devastating it is to find out that your DH has MFI. I was older when we started TTC (I was 33 when we started, got pg at 35, turned 36 shortly after having DS), and also had problems on my own - PCOS, erratic cyles, and just being "older". I never expected that DH would be the ultimate reason for us TTC for so long with no success. It was over 1 year of TTC, before he was even tested. I don't have any advice to offer as far as surgery options, vitamins, etc as my DH's MFI is not fixable. This is due to a genetic condition he was born with, he has no spermies. Our beautiful baby boy is with using donor sperm & IUI.

I hope both of you get your BFPs soon, and can do this naturally or without much medical assistance. Good luck!!!

Thank you! BeckyM!!!
Your support means a lot to me....especially when eveyone around you doesn't understand!!! I met my husband when I was 27 and he was 21....we got married when I turned 30....when I was 31, I was diagnosed with bipolar and we dealt with that...so it put off trying even though I had 2 positive pregnancy tests that year...I think I m/c b/c 2 preg tests in a row were positive... but I'm not 100% sure .Then the years kind of went by but we were "trying" all of that time on our own...so I just figured it was me and my illness....but finally last year we were told it was my husband.... it was a shock.... I wish we would not have waited so long but we did...thank you for your story, it helps and gives me hope. We are being very proactive, which I think is key. I will keep everyone posted as to what is going on.

Thanks again!!!!

Hi Everyone who is TTC

I just wanted to give a little update...we went for a second opinion for my dh. Last year we saw a urologist who should have retired about 10 years ago!!! He wanted to check my dh's prostate (which was fine, but we were there for fertility) sent dh for an ultrasound to see if he had a vericocele....went back to the urologist for a follow-up and when the dr. came in he started repeating what he said on our first visit and wanted to check dh's prostate AGAIN..I said dr. we are here for the ultrasound results...he said "oh...ok...let me go try to find the results...came back and said no vericocele was found.

A year later, I just wasn't convinced. We had an appointment with another urologist yesterday and he checked dh and said..."i feel like the left side is a bit heavy and there might be veins" I need to order a doppler ultrasound and send you for an S/A. Thank you!!!! Even if nothing is found again! He took us seriously, wrote everything down and had excellent bed side manner.

Dh is scheduled for an ultrasound on the 11th he will also have his S/A done at a lab...so we will go from there. I will keep everyone updated....

I also wanted to say...I get this all the time and wondered if anyone else did..."well, at least it's not you, it's your husband. It's easier to fix men then women" If they were in any of our shoes, they would understand how much we all struggle and it is not an easy fix.

Wow, I can't believe someone would say that to you! Kinda rude, and just shows how little they know! From everything I know of MFI, it is MUCH harder to fix, MUCH harder to pinpoint the reason, and sometimes they say there is nothing they can do.

I'm glad you got a better urologist! Hope they can figure out what's going on!

Thank you! Wallflower!

Yes, people say that to me all the time!! Co-workers, friends, my cousin..who all have children. They don't understand...and I guess, I shouldn't expect them to. I also get a lot of "so how is That going?" (referring to our fertility) I usually change the subject because I really don't know how to answer it...I feel like saying..well, i'm not pregnant yet....What do you think? but I don't.

Yes, thank you! I am hopeful, now that we have a new doc...maybe we will find out more.

I'm so sorry for the issues you are having It's so hard. I think it's great that your dh is willing to go through the testing, alot of men won't do that.

We did IVF (because there was not enough sperm to do an iui and because insurance covered most of it) because my dh has a low count. 26 eggs were extracted, and the sperm doctor (I forget his official title lol) had trouble finding 26 viable sperm! We were blessed with a healthy pg.

We did some FET's when we were ready for a sibling, that resulted in chemical pregnancies, and insurance policies changed at the clinic so another IVF was out of the question. Fast forward 4 yrs and I got pregnant! No meds, no super vitamins, nothing. This was a total surprise to both of us. We never used birth control - what was the point. So, even with my dh's horrendous sperm count, his age (47 at the time), my age (39 at the time) it did happen. So, there is always that glimmer of hope.

You can ask about your dh making several "deposits" in the sperm bank. Those deposits can be combined and used for IUI. Has your doc mentioned that?

Good luck to you! It's so not easy.

Hi Sunsetsue,
Thank you for responding to my post!! I'm very thankful that my dh is going along with everything!!! He has been so great! I'm so happy that you had two healthy pregnancies!!! Your story is very inspiring to me. I love to hear stories like yours because it gives me hope... this week has been really hard on me. I try to be strong in front of dh but when he is not here, sometimes I break down and feel a sense of hopelessness(I hope I spelled that right). No, my doctor has not mentioned the deposits for an IUI...but I will make sure to when we meet with him. Thanks again for your uplifting story.

Hi All,

I am new to this site. MY DH and I have been ttc for 21 months now and we found out in September the problem is him. We have been to see a urologist and was directed to the University of Michigan for futher evaluation. We went yesterday for our results there and the doctor put my DH on Clomid. We go back in August to see if his count and motility has improved at all. Has anyone heard men taking Clomid and if there is a good chance it works?

I too am so sad and depressed. Lots of people I know are getting pregnant and I just want it to be my turn! It really takes a toll on your life.
