I was wondering if those whose DH had a varicocele and had it repaired and then they conceived naturally would be able to share their success stories to give me some hope. DH was just diagnosed with a grade III varicocele. His counts are too low for IUI so it is either fix it and wait or do IVF. I am scared of having twins so really not wanting IVF but don't want to have to wait years hoping and praying it will work after the surgery
Did your husband have a varicocele repair?
Do you know if it was by clipping the vessel or embolizing the vessel?
How long after the surgery did you conceive?
What grade of varicocele did your DH have?
I wish I could share a success story- I'm also looking for a success story. DH had bilateral varicocele surgery in July... I'm not sure what grade he had...not bad though I don't think. I search the internet all the time looking for success stories..I have found some.
I wanted to share my success story, I hope it gives you ladies some hope, I know how hard it is. My DH and I tried to conceive for 14 months before I got my 1st BFP. That was after putting him on a ton of supplements to improve sperm quality. He was diagnosed with a left varicocle, I don't know what grade it was, she said he had several large dilated veins but didn't tell me the grade. His count was just at the cutoff for normal but his morphology was poor. I miscarried that first pregnancy and my DH had his varicocele repair right before that. He had the microsurgical repair where they clamp off the vessels. I am so glad we decided to have the surgery done because 4 months after the surgery I got pregnant again and everything looks like it is going well this time. I am convinced the surgery helped us because although we did get pregnant naturally before the surgery, it took us 14 months of really trying, longer than that of NTNP, and a TON of supplements, and I have no fertility issues. I think it it varies for each person how long it takes for the sperm count and quality to increase. I really do believe that it helps and is worth it from all the research I have done. I truely hope you guys don't have to wait much longer for your bfps.

Did your husband have a varicocele repair? Yes
Do you know if it was by clipping the vessel or embolizing the vessel? Clipping the vessel I believe
How long after the surgery did you conceive? 6 1/2 months. I'm now 30 weeks along.
What grade of varicocele did your DH have? Doc did not specify.
All in all, so glad we did the surgery, I didn't want to go the IVF route, insurance paid for it, and my husband's recovery was not bad.
gmansmom - what was you DH SA results prior to the surgery? Mine is dealing with morphology issues and everything I read says this surgery will help the count, but not the morph.

First test was total count of 47 million, Motility at 31%, strict morphology 5%.
Second test was total count of 35 million, Motility at 22%, strict morphology at 6%
After the surgery (testing 4 months later) total count 84 million, Motility at 35%, strict morphology at 8%
Doctor said best results are expected 6 months after surgery. We were going to go in for another test when we found out we were pregnant.
I can't answer these questions yet because we just went in for our left side varicocele repair...we chose the embolization route because it requires no stitches, pretty much no recovery time and little to no pain, I've read many posts that say their dh's had 2-3 weeks of recovery and pain from the typical surgery...so it was a no brainer for us...not only was the embolization much more minor of a procedure it was much cheaper than the surgery was going to be with the exact same results...we had the repair done on Sept 14th and now we wait, if no pregnancy by January we'll do a repeat SA, this is where my husbands numbers were before repair.
55 million count, 58% motility, 3% strict morphology
20 million count, 37% motility, 2% strict morphology
But be reassured...6 years ago when we first started trying for our son, his counts were only 5.6 million at best (was as bad at 1.3 million), 30% motility, and can't remember morph but it was low too and we conceived our son, naturally! No medical assistance but it did take 26 months to conceive him.
I have read and been told the repair can improve all aspects of the sperm, not just the count, I've met several great ladies who went on to having multiple successful pregnancies after repair and where the repair improved all parts of the sperm...I wish you much luck, keep us updated!

I know miracles can always happen. Our 1st son was conceived with no medical assistance. We weren't even trying and he came the one month we weren't careful. Then when we started to actually try for #2 and it didn't happen so easily, that is why we went finally for evaluation. They said he could have gotten worse over the last 3.5 yrs so we don't know what he was like when we conceived our son but the doctor said he most likely has had it since he was a teenager so it was probably low when we conceived our son so I know miracles can happen and I am just hoping for another one.
My DH has 100 Million, 60% Motility but only 2% Strict Morphology....
He also has a mild varicocile on the left. They said since it wasn't bothering him that they don't recommend he surgery cause they doubt it will help with his morphology. Now I am wondering if he should just go ahead and give it a try?

How long after the surgery did you conceive? 4 months...Now 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant
What grade of varicocele did your DH have? DH had 2 on one side and 3 on the other side
All in all, so glad we did the surgery. We went from 0% normal sperm to 2-3% normal sperm each sample and we got pregnant through IUI instead of the IVF route we were going to have to do with 0% normal sperm.
Here’s my story.
My husband had varicocelectomy. We were told that between 6 months and 12 months we would conceive. After 4 years of trying naturally, without any fertility enhancement medicine, we conceived.
First son was born March of 2011 then 9 months later I was pregnant again. My second son was born October 2012.
Now we need to have my husband get a vasectomy to quit the production of babies. I shared my story, because is worth never giving up.
Did your husband have a varicocele repair? Yes
Do you know if it was by clipping the vessel or embolizing the vessel? Clipping
How long after the surgery did you conceive? 3 months
What grade of varicocele did your DH have? It wasnt specified, but it was easily felt
I dont remember the numbers on the semen analysis but i do remember that they said he had Zero forward progression.
