I am on a friends computer, I downloaded Java, but even so it still says I need Java. I know that it is enabled and working, but it still wont load the chat application.

Have you tried rebooting the computer, hun? Sometimes a computer needs restarting for new programs or settings to take effect properly. You might also need to clear the cache and cookies so that it's not just 'remembering' the page from before Java was installed.
