Gender: Masculine & Feminine
Usage: Biblical, Jewish, English
Other Scripts: אֲרִיאֵל (Hebrew)
Pronounced: AR-ee-əl (English), ER-ee-əl (English), AY-ree-əl (English)
Means "lion of God" in Hebrew. In the Old Testament it is used as another name for the city of Jerusalem. Shakespeare used it as the name of a spirit in his play 'The Tempest' (1611), and one of the moons of Uranus bears this name in his honour. As an English name, it became more common for females in the 1980s, especially after it was used for the title character in the Walt Disney film 'The Little Mermaid' (1989).
I love Ariel! For a girl only though! I know this has been used for a long time as a male name, especially in other countries...but here in America all I can think of is "The Little Mermaid" and I think that any boy named Ariel will forever be connected to the movie. I think Ariel is such a beautiful name for a sweet baby girl!
It also reminds me of Ariel off of the Little Mermaid. I have every thought that it sounds quite feminine. It is nms but I think it would be cute on some little girls. Not for a boy though unless you want a son that gets joked on for the rest of his life. LOL!
