SILVIA
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, English, German, Ancient Roman, Roman Mythology
Pronounced: SEEL-vyah (Italian), SEEL-byah (Spanish)

Feminine form of Silvius (see SILVIO). Rhea Silvia was the mother of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. This was also the name of a 6th-century saint, the mother of the pope Gregory the Great. It has been a common name in Italy since the Middle Ages. It was introduced to England by Shakespeare, who used it for a character in his play 'The Two Gentlemen of Verona' (1594).

Love it spelled exactly that way! The nickname Silvie is especially cute.

I prefer the Sylvia spelling too; but the name itself is nms.

I think it's a nice option for parents who like Sophia, but want something less popular. They're both 3-syllable names starting with S and ending in the -ia sound.
