Opinions on the name:

Mireille

I first saw it on that bestselling book - "French Women Don't Get Fat" by Mireille Guiliano.

My Mom's side of the family is french and would love a name like that. My poor Mother ended up with the name Huguette (pronounced YOU GET), her sisters were Laurette, Claudette, Jaqueline, Marie-Claire and Aline. Our daughter is Elle which is also the french feminine.

BTW my Mom says the proununciation sounds like ME-ray. But I just asked her since she was on the phone LOL

Ooo thank you for the pronunciation! I was thinking it was like "danielle" except with a "mir" to start. I think its even prettier now that I know the right way to say it

I once taught a girl with that name; she pronounced it "mir- RAY". It's pretty either way.

I taught French for ten years and am hooked on French names - I'm just trying to convince DH of them... I love Mireille, and I've heard it pronounced several ways (depends on if you are in Canada, Belgium, or France - north, south, or Paris).

Molly - what are your favorites?

We have a french last name and I think it might be cute to have #2 be a totally French name - any less obvious choices (aka - everyone knows Amalie from the movie etc)

Since you're a French teacher I'm sure you have a whole listful!

I love french names!

I took french in high school, and we all got to pick out our own french name. I chose

Joelle
(jjjoh -elle)

a soft "j" sound. it was so pretty!

I love Mirielle btw, too.

Oh, gosh, there are so many!! Genevieve has always been a favorite of mine, as well as Chantale. My high school name was Claudine (and my then French teacher STILL calls me that!). Wait - is this a girl or do you know yet? For boys I looooove the name Cedric. There are websites of just French names, with their meanings, too. I've used those lists for my French students - they love it!
