I guess it's a surname (I googled it, and all the results I got were for an attorney or business).. but I actually like it. And there's a character in one of my husband's favorite books named Abernathy.

WDYT?

I used to know a family of Abernathys so it really really just sounds like a last name to me. I can't imagine calling anyone Abernathy all the time either. I guess you could use the nn Abe or Bernie

I also know some Abernathy's so I wouldn't be able to think of anything but that.

Hmm... I don't hate it, but I wouldn't use it myself. I wonder how you might go about shortening it? Like a nickname?

I don't like nick names, so I'd just call him Abernathy if I ever used it. I also like Ariadne, Hermione, Rhiannon.. and wouldn't shorten those. Long names don't bother me at all.

I imagine others would call him Abe, probably.

It's my friends last name so I can't really see it as a first name.

Don't like it. And Rhiannon seems like a girls name to me, considering its my friends daughters name Don't care too much about the others you mentioned too, sorry

Rhiannon is a girl's name. I was using it as an example of a longer name that I wouldn't shorten with a nick name just because it's long.
