I guess it's a surname (I googled it, and all the results I got were for an attorney or business).. but I actually like it. And there's a character in one of my husband's favorite books named Abernathy.

I used to know a family of Abernathys so it really really just sounds like a last name to me. I can't imagine calling anyone Abernathy all the time either. I guess you could use the nn Abe or Bernie

Hmm... I don't hate it, but I wouldn't use it myself. I wonder how you might go about shortening it? Like a nickname?

I don't like nick names, so I'd just call him Abernathy if I ever used it. I also like Ariadne, Hermione, Rhiannon.. and wouldn't shorten those. Long names don't bother me at all.
I imagine others would call him Abe, probably.

Rhiannon is a girl's name. I was using it as an example of a longer name that I wouldn't shorten with a nick name just because it's long.
