I think it's rather feminine for a boy's name - probably because it's so similar to Allison. I think it would work on a girl, especially these days with the "son" surname trend going on.
Any name ending in -son should be strictly a boy name. The root makes it mean "son of.." So I don't like it for a girl. Ella or Ellie are cute names that are similar.

My grandmother loved the name Ellison for a boy or a girl ~ my cousin named her first daughter Ellyson Yvonne (after my grandmother) her NN Elly ~ she'll be 7 in November!
I like Ellison, but I think it should stick with boy.
I agree. Most - son names make me think boy.
That being said, I also think the Elli- part of the name make it sound too feminine. So overall, not a big fan.
