Top 5 Names Over the Last 100 Years

Shows the top five names for each gender from 1909 to 2008. Looking over the list, I think it's interesting to see that girl names get trendy and modern, while boy names seem to mostly maintain the classics.

Robert, George, James, William, John, Michael, Joseph, Charles, Richard, David, Christopher, Matthew, Joshua, Jason Andrew, Daniel, Jacob, Ethan, and Tyler are the only boy names used in all this time.

While the girl names..
Mary, Helen, Margaret, Ruth, Dorthy, Betty, Barbara, Joan, patricia, Shirley, Linda, Carol, Judith, Deborah and Debra, Susan, Karen, Kimberly, Michelle, Jennfier, Melissa, Lisa, Amy, Heather, Angela, Jessica, Sarah, Ashley, Amanda, Britney, Samantha, Sarah, Emily, Hannah, Alexis, Madison, Emma, Olivia, Abigail, Ava, and Isabella.

Michael was number 1 for 49 years, and in second place for another 11.
Mary was in first place for 47 years, and in second place for another 10.

Interesting that there's so much more variety in female names than male names.

That is interesting :]
Even in the top 100 though you see a lot more movement of names and trendy names for girls where for boys its mainly the classics and a few trendy names mixed in.

What about Jacob? I know that was #1/top ten for awhile.

Edited it to add Jacob. Not sure how I missed that one in the list.

That is interesting to see. It is funny that some many boys names are traditional and still at the top of the list. But so many of the traditional women's names (Betty, Dorthy, Helen, Margaret, Ruth) are not as popular and seem much more dated than the boys.
