I love Amelie and Amalie (Amalie is as legitimate as Amelie) but not Amalee. The -ee ending just isn't attractive to me, and in a few years when the trend for things ending in -ee is over, it will probably look dated. But Amalie and Amelie are classic and timeless, though unusual.

I like Amalie, but pronounced like "I am" rather than like "mom." Ahm-uh-lee sounds like Anomaly.

I don't tend to follow the one letter different logic.. as in Amalie and Emily are almost exactly the same thing, the way I pronounce it, and any Amalie is just going to get lost amongst all the Emily's. Though the name isn't popular, it's uniqueness won't make much difference next to the very similar, ultra-popular Emily.

I don't care for it. The pronunciation is never intuitive to me with either spelling. I think it's fine with Emerson. If I had to pick I would choose Amalee I suppose.

Hmmm, now I'm confused on pronouciation. Which is correct?

I prefer the Amelie/Amalie spellings.

I like the name alot but I've always pronounced it AM like SAM.

No, it wouldn't be the same sound as the as the AM in Sam. It is a French name so the A sounds diiferent. Ah-ma-lee. I love the name, and was the name we had picked out for my son if he had been a girl.

I only pronounce it Amalie because DH thought of it as an alternative to Amity, which is disliked. He popped out with Amalie, and I liked it. To me it was a mad up name.. and I suppose my pronunciation would make it a made up name in a way *shrug*

But it's German, not French.

I've only known it as a French name, buy I just googled it and see that it is also listed as a German name on some sites. On these sites, it is listed as French:
Meaning of Amelie - French baby name
Behind the Name: Meaning, Origin and History of the Name Amélie
Amélie | Name Meaning & Origin | Girl Name Amélie | Baby Names World

I guess if you consider it as a form of Amelia it would be of German orgin. I don't know much about the orgin of names though so please enlighten me if I am wrong.

The accent over the e changes things. Amalie is pronounced ah-muh-LEE, While Amélie is pronounced more like AH-may-lee. With no accent it's German, and with an accent it's French, though they both come from the same Latin root word amal. As does Amelia and Amalia, which are just more variants. Really it just depends on which pronunciation you want. *shrug*

The origin doesn't matter, I'm just a big dork and thinks it's neat to share these things.

Thanks for sharing. I actually do find this stuff intresting (hence my need to visit a baby name board daily when I'm not even pregnant ).
