I need some help coming up with baby names. I am 15 weeks along; so I know I have plenty of time. However, my husband is dragging his feet on the issue and I want to be prepared when he decides to talk seriously about it.

A few things to note: we are not finding out the sex until delivery (everyone tells me I’m crazy) and this is our first little angel.

About us: married 3 years; together 10 years; high school sweethearts; traditional Irish catholic families; we have a dog and a cat, we love sports and everything outdoors, our last name it Murphy.

About our tastes in names: We both like the more traditional names (even Jason is a little too modern for me). The only real info. my husband has given me is that he likes the idea of a saint name. I looked at a lot of saint names and some of them can be rather unusual. I really like Henry and Benjamin for a boy, but he wasn’t very responsive to those. I tend to like boy names for girls (Charlie, Eliot, Andy) but then I also really like Stella. My husband didn’t seem keen on those either.

Names we like but can’t use for various reasons: Patrick, John, Daniel, James, Adeline, Abigail, Katherine, Matthew, Michael, Zachary, Liam, Lucy.

I know this is a lot of information, but I wanted to make sure you get the whole picture. Can anyone help me? I know there are some gems out there that have just slipped my mind. Looking for boy and girl names.

Thank you!

Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions!

Out of the blue, my husband sent me a list of names he likes. To my shock, they are not at all the type of names we had talked about or that I had ever imagined naming my child. Looks like this will be tougher than I thought. Our plan is to pick 4 boy names and 4 girl names for each other's lists, combine them for lists of 8, and go from there.

What you might do is have both of you make separate lists of names that you like. Then, go through them together, seeing if there is any overlap, or any names from each other's list that you'd like to add to your own. All of those names go on a list together, along with any names either of you just LOVE and can't bear to let go of yet. Then you just have to narrow it all down!

Good luck!

Mei Mei, that is a great idea. Actually, we ended up doing something like that. I gave him list of boy names and a list of girl names that I like. We then picked 4 for each other’s boy list and 4 from the girl list. We put those together for a list of 8 for each. Then we each got to “save” 1 name each from our own lists that the other didn’t pick – making lists of 10 names for each. We then ranked them separately (10 being our favorite) and added them up. The names with the highest rankings we will take to the hospital and decide then. I know it sounds rather scientific for naming a baby, but my husband is an engineer and I think it worked well for us.

Our top 3 for each are:

Boys:
Benjamin
Owen
Finian

Girls:
Evelynn
Clare
Charlotte

Thanks for all of your help!
