So i have waiting to hear this one and it could be a red herring or not. The site I got it from is not confirming it. Just reporting that this is what is floating around.

Report: Did Natalie Portman Name Her Baby Alef? | NameCandy

Quote:
Following up on a tip left in our comments, we discovered that the newspaper Israel HaYom is reporting that Natalie Portman named her baby Alef, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
so what do you think of Alef?

It WOULD be kind of cool if it wasn't a letter.

Sort of like Alpha..

Not my style at all but it's not terrible as far as celebrity names go.

So when a celebrity that comes from another country and speaks a different language picks an ethnic name (Ie Catherine Zeta Jones's daughter Carys) I give them a bit more lee way with that aspect.

So Natalie Portman giving her son an name that is Hebrew and definately out of the American Main stream is OK with me. I am not sure of the pronunciation though.

I think it fits because of her history. She was born in Israel, not America. While she was raised in the US since she was 3, I'm sure that her father's heritage and her birth place has had a large impact on her life. That being said, I don't think I'd use the letter A for any of my kids names.

Oh, I didn't realize she was born in Israel. Makes more sense now.
