I've been thinking of some place names that might work as first names, even though they're not especially common. I wonder what you all think of each of these (i.e. how 'usable' they are), and also which gender you think they would work better for:

Monroe
Niagara
Kentucky
Indiana
Britain
Nile
Jersey
Prussia
Dublin
Everest
Egypt

Monroe - To me this is just too much of a last name to be used as a first name. Reminds me of Marilyn Monroe.

Niagara - I used to live a couple hours away from Niagara Falls this can never be anything but a place name to me. If it was used as a name though, I see 'girl' because of the 'a-feminine' ending.

Kentucky - This is only a state name to me. I can't even assign a gender to it lol.

Indiana - Hmm, it's alright. I guess for a boy? Maybe?

Britain - I suppose a boy's name as the female version is Brittany. Don't like it though.

Nile - I guess a boy's name but I strongly dislike it as a given name.

Jersey - I've heard this name lately on boys but it's totally not my style at all.

Prussia - Too much a country name and I tend not to like the Pr-names, like Priscilla. I see girl in this though.

Dublin - Nope this is all city to me, but my dog's name was Dublin once.

Everest - This is a boy's name to me, it's alright but sounds kind of preppy to me.

Egypt - I know a little girl named Egypt and she's sooo cute, they call her Gypsy for short. I think it's a sweet name though I wouldn't use it myself. I love the nickname Gypsy though.

I really only like Monroe from the list- I really like that, and think it'd be for a boy.

I'd have liked some of them but there is no hope getting them past DH.

ETA: the only on I have seen use was Britain and it was on a girl. Oh and Indiana Jones of course and anotehr boy by that name.

Monroe - I think of Marilyn Monroe, rather than an actual place. I don't like it on a girl, because of the "sex symbol" imagery, and I don't like it on a boy for the same reason, but if I had to choose I'd say girl.
Niagara - It's pretty.
Kentucky - Can't do it. A dog, or a horse maybe.. not a kid.
Indiana - I really like this. I would think boy or girl.. I can't decide!
Britain - It's cute. I feel like it's a more "grown-up" version of Brittany. Girl.
Nile - Niles is a boy's name, but I can't see Nile as being anything.
Jersey - I think this is better on girls, but I don't personally like it on either.
Prussia - Girl, definitely, but I'm not a fan.
Dublin - Cute, probably a girl.
Everest - Boy, because it's close to Everett. I like it.
Egypt - Girl, because when I think of Egypt I think of Alexandria and Cleopatra - girl names. I like it a lot, and I think Gypsy is a cute name (yeah, Kes liking a nickname.. it IS rather chilly today...).

Some other ones for you:

Persia
America
Alaska
Andorra
Colombia

Cuba
Havana
Grenada
Kenya
Libya

Rome
Sweden
Sahara

Zaire
Olympia
Alabama
Maryland

Montgomery
Denver
Tallahassee
Albany
Augusta
Providence

Hartford
Raleigh

Okay, that's enough from me.

Persia - I've actually known 2 women named this, it's an okay name to me, though not my style.

America - I think of the movie Where the Heart Is, where she named her daughter Americus. Not my style but I think it's pretty on someone else's kid, it's a big name to uphold though.

Alaska - Weirdly enough all I can think is Sarah Palin lol. So definitely not my style.

Andorra - A girl's name though not my style.

Colombia - Too much of a country name.

Cuba - Boy's name because of Cuba Gooding Jr., but not my style.

Havana - It's a girl's name...I like the nickname Vana.

Grenada - Girl's name, not my style though.

Kenya - Girl's name all the way, I've taught a girl named this and Kenyatta too.

Libya - A girl's name I suppose though not my style. Reminds me of labia lol.

Rome - Prefer Roman/Romeo...I feel that Rome would be the natural nickname for these too.

Sweden - Too much of a country name to picture it as a first name.

Sahara - A girl's name to me. It's pretty but not my style.

Zaire - I've taught a boy named this before, I think it's usable as a first name. Kinda cute.

Olympia - girl's name all the way, it's alright though not my style.

Alabama - Not a name to me.

Maryland - The ''land'' in it, ruins it for me. I like plain old Mary.

Montgomery - Boy's name but not my style at all.

Denver - I guess a boy's name though it's not my style.

Tallahassee - Not a name to me.

Albany - This isn't a name to me, I used to live a few hours away from Albany, NY.

Augusta - Definitely all girl, I like the nickname Augie for this. Wouldn't use it myself but it's alright on someone else's kid.

Providence - Not my style at all, I suppose for a girl but it's too May Flower-ish for me.

Hartford - I suppose for a boy but it sounds too preppy for me.

Raleigh - I love this for a girl, I think it's pretty.

Overall I like Persia, America, Andorra, Havana, Kenya, Rome, Sahara, Zaire, Olympia, Augusta and Raleigh. Wouldn't use any of them except maybe Raleigh. But I prefer Ryleigh.

Monroe - reminds me of Marilyn, which wouldn't make it work for a boys name. I think it would be best as a girls name.

Niagara - I used to live to close to the falls to consider this for myself, but I see it as a girls name.

Kentucky - I don't see how this works as a name....

Indiana - Love this for a girl.

Britain - Love this for a girl or boy.

Nile - I'm unsure....

Jersey - Love this for a boy or girl!

Prussia - Uuuh, my family is from there? lol I don't see the name.

Dublin - I have never heard of this as a name before, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I'm thinking more for a boy.

Everest - I love this too! More for a girl.

Egypt - I think it's pretty, but can't really picture how it would work...

Again, thanks for my siggy! I absolutely adore it!!
