I'm stuck on the spelling of a possible name we have on our list... We aren't sold on it, yet, but if I could at least narrow down the spelling, I may be able to relax a bit!

The pronunciation is: CARE-iss

So, would you spell it:

Karys
Karis
Carys
Kerys
Keris

The Welsh spelling is Carys/Cerys... but we're also looking at the anglicized spelling with a K

The Greek spelling is Karis from Charis...

Everything else are derivatives from these.

but no matter which foundation, we want to make sure we have a spelling that is most properly pronounced with fewest corrections

How would you spell it to match the pronunciation best? Any thoughts appreciated (I guess I'll make this a poll question )

I know a little girl with the spelling Karis. I would do:

Karis
Keris

Well I would pronounce it differently depending on the spelling. Cerys/Ceris etc would be pronounced how you said (Ceh-ris). However Karis/Carys/Charis would be pronounced Kah-ris. I've known Cerys's, Carys's and Karis's. I prefer the Carys spelling as I prefer how its pronounced

Thank you, ladies. It's so hard to tell the proper pronunciation here in the States

My DH now says he like either Keris or Karis best... so that leaves the Greek spelling (Karis, meaning Grace) or a very creative attempt at Cerys or Karis both. Eh...

I love the name, but I want to make sure it's not butchered more than it's well pronounced.

We haven't decided yet, but darn it, if we could just get a spelling down, it would be easy to rank on our huge although quickly shrinking list!

I'd spell it the original way (Carys or Cerys) people would get used to how it is said, I am not a fan of creative spellings.

For some reason, I naturally pronounce the Karys as Car-iss but naturally pronounce Carys as Care-iss. Not sure why but that's where my head went.

So if I wanted to have the Care-iss pronunciation, I'd go with Carys or Keris. But that's just me lol!

I do love the Care-iss pronunciaton. It's beautiful!

yep, either the Welsh or Greek spellings.

My little cousin is name Karys b/c her twin is names Skylar and their mom wanted their names to have the same letters.

We pronounce it Kah-riss, like Harriss like you originally said.

I voted Karis because that one sounded the most like the pronunciation when I read it. Carys I feel like might get mistaken for "carries" type pronunciation.

I love Carys.
1. Because of Catherine Zeta Jones' daughter, that is how I learned how to pronounce it.
2. It's traditional and looks very feminine and classic.
