Nicholas. Krysie's right -- Nicolai sounds like an e.coli, sorry.

Of the two, Nicholas is the best option. Nicholai looks like an odd spelling of Nicolai.

I have only seen it spelled Nikolai, is that not the usual Russian spelling? I think Nikolai is good if you have that ethnic ancestry but otherwise Nicholas is better. I don't think it is reminiscent of e.coli, it is a pretty standard name in some countries after all. I have known a few Nikolais.

I honestly like both of them - I dont have the E. coli issue other people seem to have which is funny since I am a microbiologist who studies E. coli haha. I think I may even lean towards Nikolai
