I am looking for a girl's name, and I'm having trouble coming up with something I love. The first time I was pregnant (4 years ago), if it was a girl, it would have been Riley, but now that's too popular. I love Dixie, but some suggested it has a racist tone, and I don't want to go there. My other favorite name is Lila, but it does not go with our last name (Long). Here are some other names I like a lot, but close friends or family are already using them, but just to give an idea of my taste:

Barrett, Bryson, Emory, Avery, Ansley

I don't want a top ten name (or up and coming top ten), but I also don't want something too out there. I would love any suggestions. I'm hoping something will just jump out at me!

Thanks!

I love Ainsley (spelled Ainslie).... how about that over Ansley? It is prn. differen't than Ansley too.

Avery is cute, but I prefer Avarie. How about Ava instead of Avery?

Barrett, Bryson & Emory are boy names for me.

I don't think Dixie has a racist tone ... but if you're worried I guess it's better not to use it. I really like Dixie, though.

Anyway, Dixie, Riley, and Ansley have an Old South feel (yes Riley was popular in the South! Women gave their daughters their maiden names as first names!). Here are some other names that are, or once were, popular in the South.

Arie
Beylar
Fancy
Scarlett
Careen
Daisy
Liddie (or Liddy)
Delta
Dolly
Loretta
Shelby
Savannah
Harper
Joyce
Susanna
Honey

State names (as long as they're Southern!) are also popular. Georgia, Virginia, and even Florida or Missi (short for Mississippi, of course).

Flower/plant names are also popular in parts of the South. Camellia, Ivy, Jasmine, Magnolia, Fern, etc. Or choose a name inspired by nature itself, like Sky or Brook.

Just some suggestions. I like Harper, Camellia, and Georgia. I must admit that Fancy and Honey are some guilty pleasures of mine though. I just can't help liking them!

Thanks everyone! This is very helpful, and I've added some of these to my list. I really like the list of southern names. I like Harper and Beylar. Do you know where those came from?

Thanks!

Harper is just what you call a person who plays the harp. The author of one of the quintessential "southern" novels, To Kill a Mockingbird, was named Harper Lee.

Beylar was a family name that became popular as a first name, probably in Mississippi, a long while ago.
