We have one son named Nathan Bennett who was conceived through IVF. Before we knew if we were having a boy or girl with him, we also had picked out the girl name Meara (the Irish spelling of Mira). Both Nathan and Meara stand for 'gift from God' which was just so fitting for all we had gone through to get pregnant. We always said that if we ever have a girl now, her name would be Meara - no question about it.

Well... we don't know yet what we are having (we find out this Friday) but if its a girl we are starting to doubt our choice of Meara. this baby still is just as much a miracle as the first because we conceived naturally - thinking we couldn't get pregnant on our own. So, it IS quite the miracle! When I try to envision a cute little girl, grade school girl, high school girl and then finally a professional adult, I'm having a hard time deciding if Meara is a good choice. My DH is feeling the same.

Can you please give me your honest opinion of this name for a girl? I like that I've never heard it anywhere else before and I like that its Irish (because I'm Irish).

Hope you girls can help us decide on this from an unbiased standpoint. And of course, we can't ask any family or friends! Thanks!

I think Meara is very pretty! I personally feel that it would fit a woman at all stages of her life.

I really like Meara, it is very cute. I think it would age well also. Nathan and Meara would be a good sibset. Some other Irish girls names I like are...
Alayna
Allana
Eila (i-la)
Fiona
Sheridan
Teagan

I can see a little girl, a middle school girl...so on and so on with this name. I think it ages well! Good name.

I think it ages well. It's not a name I would ever use, though, because it sounds exactly like the word "look" in Spanish (we went over this very recently). Since it's not spelled the same way it doesn't bother me as much as Mira did, though. If I could separate myself from that, I'd probably think Meara was a really cute name.

It's a pretty name. I also agree with the others that it ages well. It also has very special meaning. I really like the name Mirabelle. Or Mearabelle? That would be like "beautiful gift from God"

I think Meara has a pretty sound to it. I like the look of the spelling Mira better, but if you're going for Irish, you probably need to be accurate on the spelling.

There are a lot of great Irish names. The thing is that once you pick one name out for a boy/girl, you tend to think of your future son/daughter as that ONE name, and that's hard to let go of, even if you find something you like better. I know because my DH and I have had our girl name picked out since we were 19 years old (we're 27 now) and I have doubted it at times, but I just feel so loyal to it!

Another option is to use Meara as a middle name, that way it's still a part of her, as she is a part of your journey to parenthood and that reflects how much you and your DH treasure her. I think it has a great story and meaning behind it, that she will always cherish. However, whether first or middle, it can be part of her history forever.

I think it's pretty, strong, and professional. I can imagine it on a little girl and a grown woman. If it has personal meaning to you as well, I think it's a good choice.

I prefer this spelling instead of Mira because of the "look" thing.

Its not a name that i would use personally, but since it has a very significant meaning to you and your DH, i think it would be good if you use it as a MN if you decide not to use it as a FN. Congrats on concieving naturally also, thats great to hear

I understand the importance of meaning. DH LOVES the name Eliana, especially for it's meaning "God has answered" or "God has heard"... and we sure prayed hard enough for this baby!

I like the name... I haven't heard it before. I think that if you love it, go for it!

I like it! Very classy and ages well! She could be a surfer or a doctor with that name.

I like Meara a lot. Maybe Maureen would be nice? You can call her Maura when she is littler & as she gets older she can go by Maureen or Mo.
