DH and I always liked the name Nathan for a boy. We were thinking Nathan Robert for the name. However, his sister just married a Nathan Robert this past October!! So, uh, we can't exactly use the name. We see each other all the time, so it would definitely be weird. We're bummed, though. We really liked the name. She had been dating him for a while, and still after all this time, we think about the name.

However, lately I've been thinking that I like the name Nathaniel too, though it's a bit of a mouthful for everyday use and needs a nickname. I went to school with a Nate, and think that is a very cool nickname. What do you think of Nate? How often do you hear it? Is it still too close to the uncle's name? Nathaniel/Nate and Uncle Nathan?

I actually prefer Nathaniel to Nathan and I really like the nn Nate. I don't hear it very often. Personally, I think the name is too close. It's personal preference but it might be confusing. My husband and I both have brothers named Benjamin nn Ben and we adore the name Bennett. We won't ever be able to use it, though. We just think it is too similiar.

I really like Nathaniel nn Nate. I don't really hear it that often anymore. I don't think it would be a problem unless Nathan goes by Nate occasionally too.

I really love Nathan, but Nathaniel is a good name, too. I don't hear it very often.

I like Nathaniel more than Nathan. Does your BIL go by Nate? Because as long as he's only known as Nathan, naming your future son that isn't a problem.

Uncle Nathan only goes by Nathan, so I'm glad most don't think it's a problem to have a Nate. If we ever have a boy, I'm pretty sure that he will be Nathaniel/Nate. DH and I both love the name so much.

The other minor detail I didn't mention is that DH's brother married a Hannah...and our DD's name is Anna. So Anna and Nathaniel would have an Aunt Hannah and Uncle Nathan, neither of them blood related, and no intentions of naming them after them!! Is that too weird?? What are the chances that our very, very top names end up being so close to DH's sibs' SOs??

What about Jonathan? I think Nate would be a fine nickname for Jonathan, and that way when the family gets together, the names would be less similar than Nathaniel and Nathan.

DITTO!
I love Nate... what a cute name! I never hear it though, which makes it great for a name, in my opinion!
