What does everyone think to the name Gypsy for a girl? I really love Gypsy Nevaeh.

Thanks!

Many Roma consider "Gypsy" a very derogatory racial slur, so I would definately say no.

First thing I thougt of. Naming a kid Gypsy is no better than naming her any other racist slur.

Exactly. I would find it's use wrong because of offending these people. Would you name your child 'Jew'?

Gypsy is a guilty pleasure of mine. However, like others have pointed out, Gypsy is often seen as a derogatory term. I don't think it's usable.

I REALLY dislike Nevaeh.

Gypsy is a slur against the Romani people, I'm afraid using it as a name is offensive and downright cruel to the child. Not only would their name be mocked at school, later in life it's likely they'd be abused (maybe even attacked) over their name. Imagine what Roma people will think when they hear her name, do you think they will react well? How do you think an African person would react to a child name with the n-word as a name? The name would also be an employment disaster, they'd have trouble finding jobs even at fast food joints and deparment stores because they wouldn't want put a racial slur on a name tag. Sorry to be harsh, but IMO naming a child Gypsy is tantamount to child abuse.

Nevaeh on the other hand is perfectly acceptable as a name, I would urge you to go with this instead. Though I'd also advise you that like other 'modern creation' names such as Destiny etc, many exotic dancers and adult film stars are using Nevaeh as a stage name, which unfourtunatley results in many people having negative assocations with the name.

Not only is Gypsy a racial slur, it's also the name of the most well known pole dancer in history. It would be like naming your child Jew.

I had no idea about the racist thing but I have never met a Roma person so that is probably why, I don't think it has put me off, I got it from an Australian Soap that I have always watched, there used to be a character named Gypsy on it.

Nevaeh is getting to be too popular to use as a first name I think and I don't care about the stripper thing, just because my child may be named Nevaeh doesn't mean she'll grow up to be a stripper, that is stupid lol.

You're not put off by the fact that Gypsy is considered a very offensive racial slur?

I'm wondering this too. I'm rather perturbed, actually, that someone would still consider the name after learning it's an offensive slur that perpetuates racist stereotypes.

Maybe she's looking for a reaction/attention?! Surely she should know that not too many people here are going to like that style of a name (and the couple others that she's been posting). If she isn't willing to consider every one else's opinions, then why should she even ask for them?!

I am considering peoples opinions, I can't help the names that I like, as I said before I didn't know it was racist, I am glad that you guys told me, I was just saying where I got it from as a name, it does put me off the more I think about it.
