There's a Russian (? I think) guy on TV who's on lots of the poker shows and his name is Kirill. The announcers have been pronouncing it ker-RILL. After a bit of research, I found that it is a Greek or Russian name meaning "Lord". However, the only pronunciation I can find says it is said kee-REEL. Anyone ever heard of it before? Thoughts?

It's different and kind of appealing, especially after hearing it a few times. DH actually said he likes it, which is an extremely RARE occurance for him!!

When looking at the name before i opened the thread I pronounced it like my friend's baby. She named him Kyril (Ky-rill) I think people will always have a trouble with the pronounciation spelled Kirill but thats JMHO. It's different though!

Well, I am Russian so I can tell you it's pronounced Kee-reel. It's a VERY Russian/Ukrainian name and commonly used there.

Thank you for the input Julia! I know it doesn't really go with the other boys but I am nearly 36 weeks and still no name decided on so at this point I'm a little past caring! I wonder why they pronounce it wrong on the show then, since the guy is Russian. Oh well. Thanks for the responses!

Maybe it's like how some people pronounce Colin like colon and others like Call-in?

I was thinking about that...I mean, does it matter if we would call our son that and then NOT pronounce it the Russian way? I think it might bother me though...

How would you like to pronounce it? The correct pronounciation is Kee-reel, however, when people say it quickly, it comes out Ke-reel, which is what you might have heard on that show. It's kinda like people Americanize the Italian name Gianna and pronounce it the "American" way, I know it bothers a lot of people. But... it's your baby and your choice

Well, I really like how they were saying it, which was ke-RILL. I've seen him on a number of different poker shows and it's always the same. That's what sort of made me start liking it in the first place. I just don't know anymore....I've never heard the name before and I'm sure no one around where I live would have either, so maybe it doesn't matter. I really have no idea how serious DH was about liking it anyways.... such a dilemma. I just wanna name this baby already!!

I like the sound of ke-rill, but I agree that it doesn't particularly fit into your sibset. Not that that really matters.

I have a friend named Kiril and he pronounces it "KEER-ull" ... so I think the extra L makes a big difference, I'd then go for Kee-reel.
