I have liked the name Adelaide ever since I played that character in "Guys & Dolls". It's been on my list forever, but recently was relegated to middle name status because I didn't like the nn "Addie" which would be the first name people would think of.

Then I wondered if Laila could be used as a nn for Adelaide. Is that kind of pushing it? Do you think it would be weird?

I also like Ada as a nn, but the "a" sounds don't match up. Does that matter? WDYT?

(I know it's name that can stand on it's own without a nickname, but I just like nn's and would like to choose names that can have them)

I think Ada works a lot better as a nn than Laila does. Laila us kind of a stretch, it would be kind of weird I think. I think Ada works fine though.

I know a girl named Adelaide.. her mom wants people to call her something way different.. Holly of Heidi or something goofy like that that doesnt even go with Adelaide.

I could see Ada being more of a nickname than Laila, but who cares? I don't see how Missy is a nickname for Melissa, but it is. If it contains any of the letters, why not?

I think nn's should fit you personally.. so if you like Laila then go ahead and use it.. but if you want others to use it you will have to ask them to call her that instead of Addie. And of course when she gets old enough she might decide to go by Addie or Ada anyway!

Use whatever nickname you want. Some people have nicknames that aren't even related to their real names, so I don't think Ada or Laila are weird as nns for Adelaide.

I really love Adelaide.

Heidi is a nickname for Adelheid, which is the German equivalant of Adelaide. It's not that much of a stretch.
