Well, there are two types of social security benefits.

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) makes payments to people with low income who are age 65 or older or are blind or have a disability.

SSD (Social Security Disability) pays benefits to people who cannot work because they have a medical condition that has lasted (or is expected to last) at least one year or result in death. It's best to apply for this sooner rather than later because the application process alone can take 4-6 months in some locations. If you're denied the first time, the entire approval process could take years.

You can apply in person (at your local SSA office), by phone or online at www.ssa.gov

Hope this helps.

I am on SSD currently and have been since Jan 2005. I will just let you know...it's hard to be accepted for SSD. They will have you feeling like the lowest of low. They may even tell you there is nothing wrong with you. IF you feel that YES,you are entitled to SSD...seek advice from a lawyer and have them help you win.
