I got my first flu shot on Nov. 1. I take care of 4 kids who are all in group child-care at least 2x a week, so I thought I should probably bite the bullet and get the shot.

Well, I've been sick ever since with a headache and constant cough. And now, for the last 2 days I have lost my voice and it seems I have laryngitis! I have never in my life had laryngitis and am so frustrated.

Are these normal flu shot side effects? How long before they go away. I have 4 kids, I NEED my voice!

I've never heard of any side effects other than soreness where the needle went in. I "think" it's a dead vaccine rather than a live one, so it shouldn't cause any flu-like symptoms.

That being said, my dad had a major problem with his last year. It nearly killed him. The vaccine is incubated in eggs. In a 'one in a gazillion' chance, MY dad got the one that was infected with salmonella. He ended up with blood poisoning and spent several weeks in the hospital before they finally got a diagnosis. Once they figured out what it was, he was cured in about 2 days. Why couldn't he have just won publisher's clearing house or something?

Sorry to be no help to you ...

Hi there! Let me put on my student nurse cap:

You can have "flu-like" symptoms from the flu shot. It's actually a really common reaction. Fever, chills, cold symptoms, all normal. Also pain at the site of the shot.

I just got one a few weeks ago, and I ran a temp of 102, so it's definitely possible! My doctor's very good about giving out a little info sheet with all the normal reactions.

HTH!
