There are several things I do or have done in the past.
When I was first beginning to meditate, I closed my eyes and held the color blue in my mind (for Michael).
Now, I do deep breathing exercises to relax, I focus on the air moving into my nose and my expanding/contracting belly. Doing this before actually beginning to meditate settles me immensely.
I use mantras in meditation as well. So Hum is my go to. So on the in-breathe, Hum on the out breathe. Sanskrit mantras rock because the words you use should have little or no meaning to you.
When I'm really jittery or not in a good place to focus, I'll use guided meditations but mostly, I try to meditate in silence because it's where I am really able to get into the gap.
Also, having thoughts in meditation is normal.. the trick is this: 1. make no judgments about having thoughts (no kicking yourself allowed). 2. As soon as you realize you are having thoughts, simply move your attention back to breathing or mantras or guided meditation. <3 <3 <3
Ive tried watching the flame of a candle, then picturing it with my eyes closed. Ive tried silence. Usually I need either wordless music or a guided meditation cd. Partly to help quiet my mind, partly to drown out distractions.
I am peace, full of unconditional love. I am confident and in tune with the Divine, receptive to guidance.
I generally light enough candles so that is the only light in the room, I then start by focusing on breathing in a brilliant white light of positive energy and breathing out all the built up angry red energy i have. Generally once I am done focusing my brain is tuned out enough to really begin. It takes me a while because of my ADD, but the outcome is so rewarding.
I don't know about you girls, but I am physically drained when I am done. I literally feel exhausted! But so calm and peaceful, I love it. I try to do it every night but at least 3 times a week.
