Alright girls, boyfriend and I have been talking engagment rings for a few months. I actually had the *exact* ring picked out but just recently he realized the site we were going through is not very reputable.. so I began my search for another perfect ring.

Diamonds were never what I wanted. Opal has always been my 1st choice, always. Then I learned that Opal is not good for an every day wear ring cuz it breaks down so easily..so more searching and I realized I wasn't going to be happy with anything else. ((sorry this is turning into a story)) So we decided that enough though we know it will eventually break to go ahead with the Opal engagement ring. I have been soo so so so sooooooooooooo excited!!! Until my phone went off the other day...I get wacky holidays, superstitions, and other random events sent to me...so I open my phone and the superstition of the day was "Unless you were born in October, it's bad luck to wear opals"

I looked into it and a lot of what I'm reading is saying its a myth but I'm still worried. I mean this is supposed to be my engagement ring so it needs to be *right* someone tell me I'm worrying for nothing!

lol I'm just too superstitious for that!

My cousins opal ring lasted 11 days. She got it wet, and then got it cold and it was toast. They spent a good sum on it. And it's almost impossible to get a store to put a warranty on an opal. They'll insure the ring and setting, but not the stone (unless it falls out)

*should add. She got it wet fishing the cat out of the fish tank. And then wore it 10 days later, just to a wedding, and the cold outside was enough to be the end of it. And it was a good quality stone too.

Yea, Ashley that's why I'm like freaking out cuz I think he is planning on ordering my ring in the next month or so and then I get that freaking message!!!

I know Opal is a no water stone, every hand wash, shower, ect I have to take it off. We know it is going to break but I'm not getting an expensive ring. We were looking at Lab made Opal too but I really don't like that idea.

I take my ring off anytime I use water and its just a band(made out of Tungsten). LOL

My grandmother has an absolutely beautiful ring made of Opal(I want it bad!!!) and its lasted forever. I dont know exactly how long she's had it but since before I was born so that would be at least 40 yrs.

I say get what you love and just follow what you know to do to keep it in good shape(like no water).

If you know the opal is delicate and are willing to care for it properly, then go forward. I have always heard that opals mean that the giver and receiver will be lucky in love

My ring is fake. lol. 3 lab created sapphires. I was able to get a substantial sized ring, for a fraction of the price of a real one. My 3 carat ring cost what a 1/10th diamond would or 1/2th real white sapphire. I love it. I just wish the dang thing FIT. I hate being fat

This is my baby:

Mountain~Mama likes this.

I think you're really feeling it in your heart and your gut, and that can't be wrong.

Go with your heart, it is just a supersition. If it makes you feel any better then the next bit of that is it is lucky if you get married/engaged in October, so you could have an October wedding and all would be good!!! If you are aware up front of what you need to do to take care of it then get what you want.

My engagement ring is amethyst. I don't like diamonds and said to Daniel that I couldn't see the point in getting a diamond one when I don't like them. My grandmother had a fit as it is bad luck to have anything other than a diamond. I told her only if I believed it!! I have had my engagment ring five years now and I still love it everytime I look at it.
