For those of you who have adopted, what advice would you give a person who is considering adoption?

I would say to be very, very patient - There are so many hoops to jump through but it's well worth it!

Yep, patience is good advice!! Especially for anyone who wants to start the adoption process from China. The current wait times are very discouraging (over 2 years from dossier-to-China to referral and getting longer by the month) and it takes a HUGE leap of faith to start something that you know is going to take that long. Is it worth it? HECK YES! But is it hard? Yep, it is, and I didn't wait nearly as long as families are waiting now.

My 2nd piece of advice is to keep an open mind. You never know what path you may be lead down once you start the process. I never thought we'd adopt an older child and we had even applied for another infant when we started our 2nd adoption. About half way through the wait though, we were lead in a new direction and ended up with the perfect 5 1/2 year old for our family!

I say patience and go with your heart. You will always have people telling you why you should adopt or of the horror stories they have heard about adoption. Don't allow others to talk you out of it. It is all worth it in the end.

I've not adopted, but I am adopted.

I say tell your kids they're adopted when they're young.

And expect some kids who don't understand to make mean/uneducated comments to your kids such as "your mommy didn't want you" or "what was the orphanage like?"

I got tons of those, and they never bothered me, but it would really hurt my little brother's feelings.

We were both adopted at birth, closed adoptions.

That is great advice, of course in our family, that's pretty easy since my girls know they're Chinese. Someone asked me once if they knew they were adopted and I was like "DUH!"
