I was curious what you call that special day - I've heard it called "Gotcha Day" and other cute names. How do you celebrate?

We used to call it Gotcha Day for Jaden, but after we adopted Jacey (at age 5 1/2), it just didn't seem like the appropriate term anymore so we started calling it Forever Family Day. We usually take them to PF Chang's to celebrate.

ohhhhhhh I loooove that name!!! I might have to snatch that one! I've never really had a name for it but we always do something to celebrate (something small but meaningful) - I'll see which she likes better - Gotcha Day or Forever Family Day - Thanks!!!!

This is a hot topic on Rumor Queen (a China adoption blog/forum for those who don't know). I use Gotcha Day. My father used to say "Gotcha" as he scooped me up when I ran down the hill to meet him after work. To me, gotcha means safety and security. There are many in the adoption world who frown on gotcha day and say it makes them think of swatting a mosquito and that it's not an appropriate term to use for a child. My daughter runs up, hugs my legs and says "Gotcha!" As long as she sees it as a positive term, I will continue to use it.

Oh wow - I guess I never thought of it that way - I always looked at it as sort of a fun word - like you said, gotcha! I wonder what other terms they use, do you know?

We used Gotcha day but after reading some articles in Adoptive Families Magazine changed to Family Day and/or Forever Family day for Sophia. Since we got Olivia on one day (2/2) but her adoption wasn't until the next day (2/3) we call the day we got her Family Day and the day she was adopted her Adoption Day. I think people overthink some of these terms. You just have to find the one that suits your family best.

I've heard people use metcha day, forever family day, "child's name" day as well as gotcha day. I feel like family day would tell my son that we weren't a family when it was just the 3 of us which I wouldn't want to do, metcha is not something I would say and "child's name" day is nice but I still like gotcha day. If Jess ever tells me or shows me without words that she does not like the term gotcha, I will stop using it. But as long as she thinks it's a positive thing, I'm going to use it. There's a poll on rumor queen about how many people use gotcha. People rarely vote that they do use it yet when I read adoption blogs, 90% of them use the term.

I asked Kirsten yesterday which one she liked better and she picked Gotcha Day - so we are going to go with that - if she ever changes her mind, I'll change it but I think for now, Gotcha day is great!
