My husband and I are thinking of adopting but I have no clue about the costs. Can anyone give me an idea about how much it costs?

It varies from almost free to tens of thousands of dollars. Depends what you're looking for. Domestic or international? Newborn, toddler, older child? Perfect or with some degree of handicap or previous problem?

As Bensmom said, it varies. For our international adoption, the costs were between 40-50K. It can be cheaper depending on country and your income but usually no less than 25K. Private domestic adoptions can also be pretty expensive but foster to adopt is practically free.

We were thinking of fostering to adopt. There are a lot of unwanted babies in my area.

I'm a foster to adopt mommy. We've been told that we have to pay the costs upfront (around $2-5K) and then the state (or government... I can't remember) will reimburse it.

Thank you. If you don't mind me asking, what state do you live in?

GA here, and the costs for an adoption range depending on if you use a private agency or go through DFACS (child services). You do have up front costs both ways, but the state here will do anywhere to a full reimbursement to a partial one (a domestic adoption with DFACS) if you use one of their suggested attys. Since both of our employers offer adoption assistance as a perk, this was a great help to us.

We used a faith based agency for the first 2 kiddos, and DFACS is whom we are dealing with for the 2 foster to adopt children we have in our house now. For us the faith based one was a lot easier to deal with, more expensive, but worth it in the long run. We finally got both the teen and the special needs infant under the same caseworker this week. THANK GOD!

Good luck!
