It can be quite expensive to adopt privately (which means either through an agency or on your own). I'd call agencies in your area which can be easily found by googling adoption agencies and your town's name. Ask questions about prices and such directly to them.
But, it is doubtful that your financial situation is poor enough to "disqualify" you from adopting. It sounds like you are doing fine on your own. Sometimes agencies will not allow people on welfare, foodstamps, etc. to apply, but few disallow for other reasons.
Adoption can be a long process, but it is very rewarding! KUP on what you do!
