First off hello! My name is Rachel. My husband and I have been married for 5 years and it is coming time that we would really like to start a family. for various reasons we have chosen to adopt. Since my husband is not from this country, we are going to adopt from his home country so an international adoption.
In my research I am finding a lot of things, but no definitive starting point! We just bought our home so that we could move out of our 1 bedroom apartment to be able to pass the home study. We will be starting that process this fall. Is there anything that I should be doing before the home study? No agency will take the whole case because it is not a prevalent adopting country. So it will be home study and then us going through the rest with the embassy and the country. Luckily my husband still has a lot of support in country as I have family there as well.
Welcome. I adopted my son through international adoption about 2 years ago, it was a wonderful experience. I don't know what to tell you since we went through an agency.
I would start getting things together like tax returns, marriage licenses, etc. You can also start collecting the I-600 or whatever forms the US government would need on this end. The paperwork is crazy but doable. Good luck and keep us informed.
Also, don't forget to start reading. There are some great books on bonding with an adopted child.
What books would you suggest that I start reading?
We have been contemplating adoption for a couple of years, but this is the time that we have finally decided to take the leap. I am honestly so excited to become a mother! I know it is going to be the hardest and possibly the most rewarding thing that I do in my life.
